Today I have looked up the difference between
camisole, chemise, and slip
(I wrote camisole and got sidetracked. I probably want to say slip.)

Also I found out if you type

into etsy, you do indeed find the exact kind of dress I was imagining

though the solution to what does the wizard wear to a ball is more like
robe, but silkier now
and maybe a layer with tassels.
