Fighting Pumpkins

beccaelizabethI bought the ebook of Seanan McGuire's "Dying with her Cheer Pants On"
and now I love the Fightint Pumpkins so much.
I only know cheer from movies, and Buffy, and that one episode of Leverage, so it's not like I was attached before, but
Seanan is very good at making all the cheer things seem excellent
even to someone who was... never known for their school spirit, and comes from a school tradition that does not cheer, and thought it looks A Bit Silly.
They are athletes and gymnasts and a team
moving as one, channeling school spirit
to fight the forces of darkness.
If you ever watched Buffy and thought
she could be more cheerleader
more cheerleader is what this story needs
or indeed if you ever saw cheerleaders and decided
more zombies, vampires, and supernatural beings is what this story needs
you might love the Fighting Pumpkins too.
In some ways the stories are meant to be light hearted and fun, but they're also set in the kind of horror world where all the girls die at the end, so, it's more like putting glitter on a tragedy
but in a fun way.
And the stories feel like the edges dont quite stick together, but they have an in universe justification, as well as the real world 'short stories written many years apart'.
The first story of theirs I found is the last one in the book, so when I went looking for more to find out what happened next, that was not exactly what I found
but I loved the stories anyway.
5/5, am probably going to reread more McGuire in other series now, because always fun.
