Due South DnD
Jun. 29th, 2024 10:19 pmSomeone on Tumblr asked what DnD classes the Due South characters would be.
Haven't played 5e at all or DnD for a lot of years, but have a lot of thoughts on Pathfinder.
I said there that Benton is a Paladin of Erastil with a wolfdog mount, though that's for Small characters. Maybe he was Small when he got started. Tweak it a little for sled use maybe...
Today I am reading the Players Guide for Reign of Winter, a very snow ice north themed adventure path, so I've decided the party shall be Due South characters.
I thought of six before checking the AP, which says it is designed for 4.
It means budging the characters around to fit the Path rather than the other way around but it means starting with a rich set of connections between characters and will give me ideas while I'm reading.
For the purposes of the AP, Benton Fraser is a Paladin of Erastil, maybe a Wilderness Warden because Aura of Comfort seems useful. Paladin might be tricky, the Guide warns you'll need to be flexible, but Fraser as a Ranger doesn't click for me, so.
RayV is an Abadaran Inquisitor Witch Hunter after what they did to Frannie,
FranV is an Oracle of Winter, also after the same incident, and
RayK might be a Bard from one of the rogueish archetypes or might be a Rogue but is focusing on undercover stuff, blending in and getting information.
StellaK is a Witch with a Stars patron. Maybe a snowy owl or ermine familiar.
Fraser's sister Maggie is someone who notices their father's spirit, which means monkeying with classes I don't usually poke, but I was thinking Shaman.
yes that's two more people than the game needs. Fraser plus two Rays means only one girl in the party and that was boring.
The Player's Guide has background traits specific to the campaign.
RayV gets Vigilante Witch Hunter https://www.aonprd.com/TraitDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Vigilante%20Witch%20Hunter
FranV gets Warded against Witchery https://www.aonprd.com/TraitDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Warded%20against%20Witchery
StellaK gets Failed Winter Witch Apprentice https://www.aonprd.com/TraitDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Failed%20Winter%20Witch%20Apprentice
RayK can get Restless Wayfarer, for being good at picking up local knowledge https://www.aonprd.com/TraitDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Restless%20Wayfarer
Ben is obviously Northern Ancestry https://www.aonprd.com/TraitDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Northern%20Ancestry but giving two of them the same trait is kind of boring even if shared ancestry.
Sharing only half of ancestry made it seem funny if
Maggie gets Blood of Giants https://www.aonprd.com/TraitDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Blood%20of%20Giants
I don't know how to use CMD stuff or sunder or bull rush though. If she's some kind of shapeshifter she can go charging in, like an arctic druid? That drops the ancestor theme though.
I mean if I give her Oracle instead she can be Haunted and the ghost can be a minor annoyance instead of a power. Don't know though.
... I haven't rewatched Due South in a long time and now I'm wondering if I know these characters well enough to spin an au with them...
Erastil is a Lawful Good god of small communities, farming, and hunting.
Abadar is a Lawful Neutral god of cities, contract law and merchants.
They and their worshippers can get along, but they have very different ideas of what is best, that can simplify down to country vs city.
Two sets of siblings, one who know each other real well and one who are near strangers, plus a divorced ex couple who are sticking together for professional reasons and possibly because of knowing each others secrets. That can work.
I don't know if I'll still think this is a good party tomorrow morning but it's a thought I took for a walk tonight.
