Feb. 20th, 2006 01:50 amHaving read the chapter on feminisms in the 'introduction to cultural studies' book I've got, my conclusion is I need another book.
Its not that its bad. I think. I get a niggly feeling about some of it, probably just that the writer doesn't much like anything. It seems to spend much more time in the criticisms than on the pointing out what its useful for. Which is frustrating in an introduction, because if you don't know much then being told how things *don't* work doesn't entirely encourage you to figure out how they *do*.
But mostly it seems to skim past a lot of things that the sociology textbook dug right into, and was interesting about. Cultural Studies book ties it in to the media and reading texts more, naturally, but is much smaller than the Textbook Of Doom and didn't feel like much of a mind meal.
So, I need another book, with more meat on it.
Which is handy, because I have such a thing right here. I hope. 'Theorising Gender', which I bought after reading bits in the library. It had stuff about Butler that fed fic bunnies. Possibly its a bit much, but I'm sure there will be interesting bits.
Also I shall go back and read the 'Sex and the Slayer' book from the start this time. I skipped to the masculinities bit last time (yes, fic bunnies again). This time reading from the beginning may help.
Eventually I need to write a 2000 word essay, probably about representations of gender in the episode 'Halloween' though the tutor hasn't told me if thats a good topic yet.
I like Halloween for the contrasts. Large print, you know?
I don't know how much of this theory reading will fit in an essay.
But I'm actually pretty much having fun just reading stuff.
