I just rewatched Dalek.
That is a bloody good episode.
And also, a showcase for the ways the new series borders on being a reboot.
I mean, the Doctor goes really dark there. And there's that bit about 'the woman you love', even though I think its fairly likely that a Dalek wouldn't be much for subtle shades of meaning in that word. And there's the way they wipe out the past and substitute Horrible Trauma.
I like Gallifrey. I like there being Time Lords that aren't the Doctor. It multiplies the stories that can be shown. Wiping them all out cuts off so many possibilities.
BUT
the comparison between the Doctor and the Dalek was a very strong story. *Very* strong.
And watching him act his arse off was great too. The things he says with expressions.
Though it does keep reminding me of what I don't like about my new TV. It has moments of crystal clarity, and then they move. The contrast winds me up.
Also I still don't like the sound.
The leaflet has all sorts of WARNING to say about leaving black spaces around the screen. Like it was EEEEVIL and would destroy the TV. So now I watch TV and its all stretched out. Is that really necessary? Would it be so terrible if I watched at the proper aspect ratio? I honestly don't know. But everyone being fat and distorted is weird.
Also it makes people difficult to recognise.
*pause, peers*
Or possibly they recast that part, or it isn't the same character I thought.
Meh. Annoyance.
