So, Much and Robin
There's been actual declarations of love here, so basically all we're missing is the kissing. And I reckon this will remain true. This combination doesn't particularly appeal.
But beyond that -
Robin's nickname now is Lavender Boy (even though it should be Rose Petals)
Much is... fussy, domestic, a bit of a C3PO with the language just a bit fussier than anyone else there, frequently ineffectual and, generally, a bit of a Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Or in other words, a teensy bit of a sissy stereotype.
Robin is all about the women. He has a big obvious HETERO, REALLY! flashing sign going on. With the kissing last week and the being all about Marion. Plus this week he doesn't include Much as much as last week, and he does the exact same 'last man' bit with the new guy he did with Much.
And yet, Lavender Boy. And being the one to say the L word.
And also Much, once the fighting started, kicked arse just as much as the people around him. Right up until he got thrown the rope and faffed around a bit instead of doing the bloody obvious. But in the middle there, fighting, and not dying, even if he did get the stupid hat.
So...
Is there some kind of laugh at the slightly queer stereotyping thing going on? Possibly.
But...
See one of the classic ways to establish action movie buddies as safely hetero is to have an obvious sissy/queer character there for contrast, who the main guys will obviously look down on, for they are macho.
Making one of the main guys kind of sissy, and having them declare love for each other, that would be a bit different. In a good way. Also a bit more like Angel.
Yet Angel ended up pissing me off by consistently using the gay for laughs and then killing or wrecking the queerest characters right at the end. Or, with Andrew, having mature=straight.
Right now Much could be read as dependent on Robin, which would mean for him character growth maybe means growing away from Robin, which could quite easily mean a woman in his future. But that would be like what annoyed me with Andrew.
Alternatively he's going to have to sit there and mope while Robin chases skirt, which isn't very much better.
I guess... They're starting it as slashy as all get out. This is good. But I'm relatively sure that isn't the direction they'll be going in. Which means there will be bad, because they'll be going away from this closeness, or using it for laughs.
I'm not so much in love with subtext that I'm content when that is all there is. I've reached the point where I'm kind of sick of people laughing at, well, me. What I care about.
On the other hand, if they actually do put some of the merry men in a same sex relationship, I will be doing the happy dance, even if the stunts are kind of boring and overhyped.
The cool thing is the odds aren't quite as long as they would have been a couple seasons ago.
But still, kind of skinny.
In other news, as per usual, Marion is The Girl.
Granted, she's a more rounded, political, scheming, and generally interesting girl than The Girl often gets to be, but compare to all the other female characters.
That didn't take long.
So, there's women to be looked at, spied on, and rescued.
And there's Marion.
That I have a big problem with. It is actually one more woman than there is on Supernatural - and, depressing - but women are not objects of the gaze, or of the plan, or all that. Women are just as much characters too.
Granted, if they were all amazon action hero in the woods types then I'd be all grr arrgh historical accuracy, but that's just one of the reasons I suspect this show won't be for me, in the long term.
Yes, I can find something to whine about everywhere.
I ate all the donuts, sort of by accident, while I was thinking on reading. And now I've started on the mini chocolate. Just... not my shiniest day, really.

Date: 2006-10-15 10:35 pm (UTC)I think I'm basically grumbly with apprehension.
Because then I can be either right or pleasantly surprised.
