Is getting a bit frustrating. Finding a location and returning to it are becoming Really Big Deal things. They're talking about mapping by landmarks, and how landmarks are always altered by storms. And they have weather satellites. Yet they don't have GPS, or anything resembling Google Earth. No detail.
Since a decent GPS system would just shortcut this entire section, I'm kind of losing patience with it. I mean in fantasy it would be fair enough, but this is an interstellar federation with instant communication and supershiny computers. Lack of GPS is sort of noticeable.
I might be misreading it. Maybe I've missed why GPS wouldn't work.
More likely the writer hadn't thought of it.
