'Contrast between looking and doing'
says the lit textbook, and thoughts are made -

Torchwood has as its mission the collection of alien technology. Not the use. A bit of a lack of doing.

As with the resurrection glove - something that could be of great use in criminal investigation, but Torchwood wouldn't contemplate using it for such a thing. Use only for tests.

All the tech toys, they're not supposed to be used. No one is allowed to take them home - no one is allowed to use them, just look at them.

Looking and doing, Torchwood as we initially find it is firmly aligned with the looking side.

And how come? Queen Victoria set it up as a defence against aliens. Doing! Defence!
So, we see them get active in defending Cardiff from the gas alien. And to do that Owen uses tech, only he isn't supposed to. Jack tells him off.
Then Jack uses the same gadget.

What makes the difference? Same use of same tech, but Jack has the authority?

Also, Jack's little oft repeated line about the 21st century being when it all changes - note the passive of that. He doesn't say "When we change everything."

Jack is looking-not-doing?

So episode 3 we get a technology that only allows them to look. They can't do. And they can't look away.

But they can't *just* look, they have to *feel*.

Looking vs feeling, detached vs involved, this shifts the side the Torchwood team are on. Or, at least, it does for Owen. He goes from looking to feeling, and from there to doing.

Gwen was always on the feeling-doing side.

(Lookit, they have more in common now than 3/4 of their names.)

Future looking - by looking at that future they created it. But changed the one Bernie saw.

Jack locks the thing away, for the trouble with future knowledge is you have to try and change it.

Says the time traveller.

So is he just looking?

(Considers the current inexplicable lack of Jack sex. Just looking?)

Standing on rooftops, far away, looking-not-doing. Watch the sunrise, lookit all the people going to get up and start feeling, BUT looking, not doing. CCTV, looking.
Big windows on Owen's place, looking?

Also a whole being looked at thing there.

ANYways, latest thought-spark.

At this rate I manage about 3 pages of book before I have to come write about Torchwood again. Is a good thing I've read that bit once already.

Class tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to get my head in gear to think about actual assigned texts.

Ibsen, Doll's House. Relations between genders, between married couples, between friends.
Torchwood is very, very different than that Doll's House.
