Drabble: The First Time
Sep. 21st, 2004 03:35 pmThe first time Ripper killed a vampire was two days after he came to London. Fresh off the train and still looking it, tough attitude still brittle, no place to sleep and no money for one. Still distrustful of the street people he sought a place on his own, out of the way. A vampire’s natural prey. Most such died before learning better. Most hadn’t been raised to keep a stake under their pillow and a sword by the bed. After that Ripper wore the attitude easier, and set about finding someone else with a clue to watch his back.

actually I wrote some baby Ethan story, but then I realised that all small children are a force of chaos and it was kind of generic. But cute, and sparkly.

Date: 2004-09-24 03:27 pm (UTC)When he was a little bigger the world was too. Once he was on his feet his Mummy was rarely off hers. Ethan ran everywhere, trying to see the next thing, the new thing, everything in the world he hadn’t seen yet. Take your eyes off him for a moment and he was out the garden to the neighbours’ places, or out front in the road. The little road was quiet, but it led up to the big road, and that was anything but. Cars and trucks and buses all day long. A whole world going past to who knows where. Mummy didn’t like it when he went that far, but far was where he wanted to be, out where his Daddy’s stories lived, with firemen and dragons and railways and demons and all the special things.
Daddy had the best stories. If you asked Mummy why a thing- why the plants grew in the ground but not in your room, why the cat didn’t like things tied to its tail, why putting all the paints in the bath at once made mud instead of rainbows- she would usually say ‘Because’. And often get a funny pinched face and go running off to see. Ethan thought Mummy didn’t know much more than he did. But she didn’t seem to like it when he tried to find things out.
Daddy didn’t say ‘Because’. He said the plants loved the earth very much and missed it when they were away. Then he had to explain they loved the sun and rain and outside things too, so bringing earth up to the plants still wouldn’t make them grow. He said the cat was very vain and thought it’s tail was the most perfect tail ever, so it didn’t like bows in it, and things that went clang scared the mice away. Scaring mice seemed like it should work better than chasing them, but things that went clang also gave Mummy one of her Heads.
Ethan didn’t understand how come Mummy had more than one Head. He never found any spares, and they always looked the same on the outside. But he supposed they must be like pies, and the filling all different. Mummy was always saying Daddy was filling his head with nonsense. Maybe hers got full of clangs. They were less fun than nonsense anyway. Daddy’s nonsense was the best thing ever.
Of course sometimes Daddy didn’t say ‘Because’ because he just snored. He did that a lot. And other times he wasn’t home. Those times were when the ‘Whys’ piled up until Ethan had to try things for himself. Sometimes that didn’t work out so well.
