This episode is all about *Jack*. The more I read the meta layers the more I simultaneously want to hug him and get some serious fucking therapy. Choked by an excess of passion? Everyone around him, everyone he cares about.
Rose petals... I tried to make something of Estelle's name, something about Jack and stars and loss - perhaps that he has lost the capacity to travel among the stars and now has doubly lost Estelle - lost her in the 1940s and then again now. She can die, he can't. Come to think of it, he lost Rose twice too, once in "The Parting of the Ways" and then (though he presumably doesn't know what happened) in "Doomsday".
It also has some dodgy CGI monsters that were far better when we couldn't see them. If it was me I'd just take them out and blur them.
I agree. The faeries that looked like shining wing-shapes were fine. The faeries that looked like the Impossible Man from the Planet Pop-up were ... mildly annoying.
Jack to Ianto, "you shouldn't be here". Ianto to Jack "Neither should you".
I keep trying to read more meaning into that, and I don't mean slashy subtext. (Who needs subtext when we have text?) No, it's the idea that Jack shouldn't be there - he should be in another century, or he should be dead on a game station - but here he is. Perhaps that is all the double/triple meaning it has, because I don't expect Ianto can have more dark secrets.
This show is hitting so many of my kinks. It's like somebody collected all the good bits from all my old fandoms and poured them in together and then added actual slash.
