beccaelizabethDS9 keeps getting more interesting. Twisty revelations about some characters, twisty things that turn out not to be revelations about others, and all that politics. Is *fun*.
Just saw Civil Defence, where the old security program tries to kill them all, which is a nice... I was about to call it gen and ploty... okay, so it kind of is. Er, I mean it's got some nice action and interaction. It advances the politics stuff only a tiny smidge, but it gives every main character a good bit of stuff to do. And brings Garak and Gul Dukat out to play in ways that get really fun. Plus it strikes me as being a fun RPG setup, if you've got characters that could do that kind of stuff... er, actually, there's a place for every kind of character, so that works out.
Also, Jake gets to keep on being a teenage boy and a character and do hero stuff yet not be so hellishly over... er, not points or levels for TV, but you know what I mean. He doesn't outclass the adults, and is advancing plausibly, and manages to do things with just enough wobbly ignorance to keep it interesting. And has fun stuff with his dad as well.
Other teenagers have been written far worse. Not naming any names.
Other random observations...
I like Jadzia, but it seems to me that she gets new hosts the way other people get, like, character and background and stuff. But we do get stuff about Jadzia in there as well, and it is the distinctive feature of the character, so I guess I'm just a little sideways-stare about the balance.
Major Kira... I thought at the end of season 2 her roots were showing and now in season 3 her hair matches her eyebrows. I find this more distracting than is reasonable.
I like the purple hair on the alien. My hair came out less purple than I'd hoped. I sulk.
mind you, I don't splodge color over the pillows like the bright red does, so swings and roundabouts.
Julian is just a teensy bit less puppy. Remains too talkative and socially... unbalanced comes out sounding harsh, but I mean... he can charm people with like an all out chat assault, or he can irritate the hell out of them the same way. They never show him mastering the art of shutting up. It's kind of fun.
... I keep imagining Captain Jack arriving on the station. It's oddly jarring. I don't know quite why. I mean there's all kinds of dark and twisty and intermittently screwing up through use of alien technology so you'd think he'd be right at home. Yet in my head it still seems weird.
Possibly because they have sets that are, like, gigantimous and look like you could poke the walls and they wouldn't wobble.
In less cool news I keep noticing that, on the big TV of shiny expense, these eps sometimes look like crap. Grainy, streaky, motion blurred / ghosty crap. It's really rather annoying. I can't find a set of settings that make me like watching these on there.
My computer monitor may be many years old and one of those huge boxy things you hardly ever see any more, but it has yet to piss me off on quality issues.
Mind you, it's like a third the size and I don't expect as much from it cause I mostly watch downloads.
My sofa is inadequate as a place to sit around all day. My neck hurts and I'm all squished up. I should get a better sofa. But I'd have to rearrange all my furniture to have somewhere to put it.
... That's a point, I have to tidy up in here before monday to have somewhere to put a printer and the new laptop. I mean the laptop will mostly go in a bag, but the printer... I think I'm getting a printer anyways ... er, whatever turns up will have to find somewhere to be put when they bring it round to 'install' it.
Meh.
Also, I've wildly run out of DVD shelving. I'll have to rearrange stuff yet again. Maybe actually get rid of the VCR that hasn't been plugged in for years. Even then I'll still be at least a foot short. This is what happens when I decide to acquire whole TV shows.
I think I'll go to bed and read a book instead. Let my neck straighten out.
