Older is better
Nov. 28th, 2004 04:37 amI'm realising that I'm not actually interested in Ripper/Ethan when they were young. I'm only interested in it as flashbacks of our Giles and older Ethan. I mean I'm writing it, because I want to know where they come from. But pick two lingeringly adolescent testosterone poisoned mages- or three, and call them a Trio- and really, not that interested. Watch the antics! Aren't they funny?
Yeah, not so much. There are far too many stupid teenagers in the world. The smart ones are much more interesting.
The Trio are interesting in season 6 because of the way they mix in with the rest of the story. But on their own, not so very interesting. Jonathan was always the most interesting because he kept on nearly almost acting like a grown up. And then missing. But it was good to see him try. And Andrew got interesting in Storyteller, just as soon as he admitted he'd screwed up and started trying to do better.
Ripper (and I use that as shorthand for bad magic hates the world probably 21 year old Giles, not a seperate personality, which shouldn't need stating but probably does) is only an interesting character to me as a fraction of Giles, as what lead up to Giles we met. On his own, just not interesting. Teenage rebellion. blah.
Ethan, who could be seen as still being just that self indulgent guy who won't grow up, is interesting to me only because I can see a lot more to him by way of the Chaos magic angle, which again can look teenage but has a lot of interesting depths.
And Giles/Ethan gets interesting in a lot more ways than Ripper/Ethan. Back then, sex and drugs and rock and roll and magic and all the demons. Just kind of a big id mixture. Now there's conflict. Stuff to be resolved. Much more interesting.
