You know that thing where they didn't move when the camera was looking?
That was brilliant, that was.
See if they'd been moving and only froze when the characters looked at them it would have looked a bit silly, like a game, so unscary. So that's reason enough.
But
By the logic of the episode, the statues froze when any living being was looking at them.
Cameras didn't count or else the angels outside the police station would have been stuck there.
So...
if the statues froze when *we* were looking at them?
It's because we were there.

Yes, I agree, that was brilliant, and it was a wonderfully subliminal way of bringing us into the story - putting us in the same sort of situation as Sally or Laurence or anyone in the story. Luckily, as far as I know, no viewers fell into the past by accident!
