music needed
Dec. 14th, 2004 10:29 pmOkay, someone with more musical knowledge of me- I need a song for Ripper to sing. It is the first time Ethan has heard him sing, so it is back in 1975 (by my timeline). Which rules out all my tiny small knowledge of music completely. It needs to be something angry and shouty and all about how the singer needs to say something that nobody else has said before. Which probably doesnt rule out much music ever. It also needs to be something popular and mainstream, because Ripper is not as cool as he'd like to think.
Anyone with relevant knowledge or suggestion of where to get same?
edit:
okay, I googled UK music 1975, and that pointed me at the BBC site. So then I felt daft, because of course. Duh.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ilove/years/1975/music.shtml
has a little popup which plays bits of all the UK number 1 singles that year
Oh dear...
REally. No. *shudders*
There is a reason I've never heard of any of this...
here lists all UK #1 for 75-59
okay, ones I can listen to without shuddering-
18 Jan 1975, Status Quo, Down Down
22 Feb 1975, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me), which I actually quite like. Hmmm.
8 Nov 1975, David Bowie, Space Oddity
29 Nov 1975 Xmas No 1, Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody
but those two are too late in the year.
'Stand by your man' was a 1975 #1 too
I have bad, bad soundtrack in my head...
70-74
stuff that would be older by then, therefore he could know
I read now.
and listen on BBC.
oh. dear.
*shudders a lot*
er, no offence to anyone that actually likes this stuff, just... my ears are unhappy...

My lack of music knowledge is vaguely embarrassing. i'm just not big with listening, most of the time. Reading easier.

Date: 2004-12-14 03:49 pm (UTC)Julia, I should also be able to come up with an appropriate Led Zepplin song but the brain is not what it could be, today

Date: 2004-12-15 09:30 am (UTC)The Who are good, very very British. I used to have an English boyfriend and he was very into them. He was over ten years older than me, so the time line should fit. That bf was also into dope, curries, and greenpeace. LOL. Those were the days.

Date: 2004-12-15 08:02 am (UTC)Hmmm. I was going mainly by your description of the music. And I always take the bay city rollers comment to be out of character (or they hadn't really considered that part of his character at that point). From what we see of his record collection and ripper's taste in band candy, he'd go for harder music, and guitar oriented.
In terms of timeline, you don't need to focus on 75 of course, but anything prior. Also, number 1 lists tend to give you more mainstreamy type music, which won't give you the angry vibe you're looking for.
[Space Oddity, btw, originates in 69, so it's also early enough - but is quite the wrong atmosphere for what you describe.]
Iggy pop's raw power would be early enough, lou reed's transformer and berlin, (although not very shouty), the who...
Another song that comes to mind is pink floyd's dark side of the moon.
I'd also check some Hendrix in your place. Ripper's a guitarist, after all.
By 75, punk had already started (e.g., sex pistols formed in summer of 75), but I don't know if Ripper would go there. Depends on your characterisation, i suppose.
btw, while the stones' sympathy for the devil is not angry, it is the sort of song ripper would love messing with and that Ethan would love ripper for. ;)

Date: 2004-12-15 09:18 am (UTC)I mostly take it for him being deliberately annoying, given how dry his sense of humour usually is.

That would be why 75 actually, taking the photo of Ripper on stage with that familiar looking guy in the background as canon, he shared a stage with the Sex Pistols at least once. But that is later in the story than the incident I'm finding music for.
I wanted to use music to show him going from mainstream bad boy to cutting edge punk. So older music would work better for that.

The Ig or that type of crowd, then.
