'Childe', lack of word for it
Dec. 20th, 2004 07:29 pmI've been thinking on the word 'childe' and how it never gets used in the series
and I think the lack of word for opposite-of-sire is actually kind of telling
The vampire that makes you is your sire, your boss, the one who gets to boss you around, and also kind of virile and, well, manly except sometimes they're girls.
The vampire you make? Is nothing. There is no significant relationship there.
The language used suggests that the only power structure goes upwards- made to maker- owing toowed. There is nothing reciprocal about that.
Actually caring about the vamps you make? Exception, not rule. Sire a whole bunch of them, why not?
Sometimes someone makes a ritual of it- Darla waiting for Angel, Drusilla for Spike or Darla. But I'm pretty sure that is the rarer case. From what we see of the random slayage most of the time they just get sired and jump out the grave alone.
A Sire has made a significant difference in a vampires life, but the vamps they sire were barely more than another meal. Could be a passing whim or some impulse to spread evil in the world. Very rarely about wanting that individual around. Very rarely a caring kind of thing.
Vampires don't use 'childe' because it is not a significant relationship and therefore doesn't need a
word.
