beccaelizabethSo I'm reading a thingy in the reader about poststructuralism and feminism. It uses rape as an example of how language/discourse influences institutions/processes which influences individual lives. How discourses surrounding femininity and masculinity make rape trials about feminine 'provocation' and masculine 'natural urges'.
Aside from making me feel kinda sick, it is of course making me think on particular episodes of a couple of TV shows. Y'all can guess the ones.
And it's exactly why arguing about the TV shows matter - the mass media show stories to manymany people, put the meanings and values in circulation. But of course they can be read in a bunch of different ways, hence me originally thinking Torchwood was doing something kinda clever with karma, but some writers turning up to say actually they think Owen is the hero and didn't do anything bad. *pause to feel sick again*. So that multi-reading thing has to be part of why things don't change - people look at the same things through their different discourse-goggles and both see a text as confirming their own ideas of natural/normal/good, so the status-quo lot don't understand when the need-to-change lot point at it as example. But that's why this pulling things apart in essays thing helps, on account of then you can say 'this was rape and this was bad and this is why', and it gets a lot harder to read that sentence and not get it, though of course you can still disagree with it.
I'm pretty sure I've said all that before.
I could go apply similar thinks to 1-07 instead. Because if there's a pendant that puts your thoughts in someone elses head that's like hypodermic model mass culture times a billion, interpellation that really works. If telling them they thought that thing that actually you thought can really work then it messes with their whole decision making process. Therefore mucking up consent.
... I have enough problems with that episode (evil-insane-dead-lesbians for teh lose) without adding 'and possibly rape' to the mix.
That was such a dumb story though. There's so many better stories they could make with the same ingredients.
