beccaelizabethSo, headache went away, sleep didn't happen, and I have now read a book.
'The High Lord' by Trudi Canavan, third in a trilogy that I haven't much liked.
It has a teenage girl as a central character, but everyone she interacts with is a guy, which gets annoying. And in the 2nd book there was a sweet gay romance happening with another couple of characters, but in the bit I just read that basically amounts to a lot of running around hoping nobody killed his boyfriend, which isn't exactly hero stuff.
And the girl falls in love with her guardian/mentor/boss who has been holding her hostage against the good behaviour of her friends for years but oh look he had a good reason lalala kissing now
*sick noises*
And then he ends up dead of stupid. I mean, it's supposed to be a grand climactic battle, but the sequence goes:
find out there's a really big magic battery at the university
go to the university
stand next to the battery
... die of giving all your power away without using the battery
that's not hero stuff, that's just dead of stupid.
And then the girl turns out to be pregnant, also of stupid, because she assumed he was taking care of it and she didn't know how and really, is this the happy ending? Her distant and scary boyfriend dies of stupid and leaves her pregnant? I so don't think so.
And, okay, she ends up running a hospital and looking after poor people and stuff like she planned from the start, so that part doesn't suck, but the last line is about the baby and it's like... okay, this book is about a female protagonist, so of course she has a boyfriend who makes all the decisions (except for the part where she refuses to leave him even when it would have been fairly sensible) and then she gets pregnant.
Blah. Extra added blah with more blah on top. I think I might sell these books, they're that blah.
I find myself thinking Doctor Who is much better. Because people might leave to get married but on the whole they don't get dead and/or pregnant of stupid.
I miss Romana. Sort of at random. *shrugs*
I attempt sleep again now. But first I had to go be irritated at the whole internets. *shares*
