Rewatched Voyage of the Damned on the BBC website. Had to install the latest flash player to get it to go fullscreen; discovered it was pixelated all to hell and gone anyway. I mean some of it was crystal, but other bits... the opening credits were just nasty, mushy mess. I think next time I buy a TV I'll take the DW opening credits on DVD to play and see what it thinks of them. Whoosh.

I think I liked it better on rewatch. It felt quicker, somehow. Yet I still feel that the whole thing could have benefitted if it actually had to fit the hour - there's a good ten minutes trimming could be done and get a better final product. Many will disagree with me, and fair enough. It just felt a bit kitchen sink in places. And it kind of changed type about twenty minutes from the end. Eh.

oooh, you know what would have been cool? If the ship was the cyborg, Titanic!Max, and now he lost his fortune and all that he just wanted to go out with a bang. ... okay, maybe not all that cool, I just... didn't so much like the bad guy. *shrugs*

So there's the racism meh (guess who dies first!) and the feminism meh (suicide is clearly the only response to love!) and possibly classism meh (stereotypical salt of the earth types for the... why?) but probably not marxism meh because clearly evil capitalist oppressors has to be a win there. Disability is meh again, because having good-but-not-human cyborg who dies does not in fact make up for evil-humanoid-cyborg, especially since being portrayed as less human due to disability is at the heart of the basic problem. Especially especially because of the whole needs wheels = evil thing cropping up abloodygain. Generation meh? Yup, because the Doctor won't travel with the old guy. Although, to be fair, by the end of the episode he was back to that whole everyone dies must be lone thing he has going on intermittently. So he probably didn't mean it personal.

Oh, nitpick - you know that thing where the guy has a credit card with a million on it and does the dance of being rich? The important thing about credit cards - the really important thing - is that they are for borrowing money. They will, at some point, have to be paid back. And that card belongs not to him but to his employer, the extraterrestrial company that already went bust. It is, therefore, voodoo economics at best and at worst outright fraud to be using it. Not money.

Furthermore if the £1million translates to credits 50million then the 5000 credit phone bill translates to about £100. What's the cost of living that he'll take 20 years paying that back? Or did I get the math wrong somewhere?

The thing of it is though that while I can complain about the isms all over the place, I actually rather liked it. Things went book and they played rounders with halos and the Doctor used up two of his questions asking how many questions he had and they nearly crashed into the Queen and only Britain is Great and it was all just rather cool.

Also DT looks absolutely gorgeous in that outfit. I mean, I keep telling myself he's just this skinny geeky guy, but the rest of me keeps shushing and saying that's the point and wondering if he'd look just as gorgeous out of the outfit too. It remains vaguely offputting to feel that way about the Doctor.

Also, randomly, I ended up watching this on my laptop in bed. I came through here so I could get started on some kind of typing related project, but my house now has wireless, so it didn't really help.

... I'm never going to get homework done again, am I?

*facepalm*

I can hand wave the credit card being a pre-paid one, but the thing that struck me is that Mr. Cooper probably doesn't speak any Earth languages, let alone English.

Odds of getting picked up by immigration, and then UNIT, then Torchwood? High.

If all them people that left to get married or run a hospital or whatever stopped being able to speak the language as soon as he left there's a lot of very up the creek former companions out there.

Yeah, I've always wondered that about Vicki, stuck in ancient Troy.
