Jan. 11th, 2008 07:55 amI have something that could possibly be called an essay.
I need to lose 225 words, or possibly start over and write the thing so it flows properly. And the only bit of the argument that's actually mine got a bit buried and tailed off without concluding properly. And I'm going to have to write somewhere that I think all the good thoughts happened in Hall/Hill/Geraghty and I doubt I've managed to come up with anything new. But there's a ton of words all in a row with quotes both from the movie and from people writing about the movie and people writing about theory that only just sticks to the movie.
I think if I chop the first paragraph off I'll have an essay that makes the same point without referring fuzzily to stuff I'm pulling from memory. And I'll probably have it under word count too.
Essay goes:
Is identity hybrid?
Well people used to construct it as a binary, say black/white. Black identity formed by (a) hailing/interpellation as part of black community and (b) reaction to pressure. Some characters in this film think this way. But they're the ones who make all the trouble and get in most of it. So the film doesn't agree with them. (I probably need to write that sentence in to make that point).
Other characters consider class/employment most important, and here's an example of how that intersects with race.
And then there's Omar who doesn't fit the boxes, wanders around opening doors, and uses sex to destroy racism FTW.
Film thinks identity is complicated. Have some quotes. They think so too.
The End.
... that's a pretty good answer, yes?
... okay, that's the best answer I'm going to have by 1600.
... Oh buggeration, I've got to actually physically go to college to hand the damn thing in. I hate that.
... Word count - if I abbreviate the film title I think I save a good dozen words. Think that's worky? Don't know if I'll be being that fiddly on this one though...
