DW bunnies: many
Feb. 14th, 2008 02:37 pmYou know, is weird - I'm a Torchwood fan, like really a lot. I'm a DW fan, but I'm not on any comms or reading the fic or even reading many of the books (just the new series ones so far). TW? I'm on all the comms I can find (which gets hellish repetitive when people repost to every single one), I read all the fic I can get my hands on, I read all the books and expect I'll continue to. But when I get plot bunnies? Doctor Who. Even when it's in response to something from TW.
Also? Unhelpfully? Almost all my bunnies are for Original Companions. Who wants to read that?
I just got half a bunny combining Martha with a news story I read about how some lackwits set traps for firemen and then set buildings on fire. But that's not a whole story yet.
I think the thing is, I know how to invent companions. You need a solid question for them - what is the problem to which travel with the Doctor is the solution? And then you go answer it. With aliens.
Yet with canon companions... well, Rose was bored, but she got a really stupid send off so it wasn't like that got a proper answer. Cause the proper answer is to learn to look at Earth the way the Doctor does, with glee and wonder. So then there's Martha, and what was her problem? By the first few minutes of her first episode I would say it's that her family all talk to her and don't talk to each other and her life is really portioned out being their lives. Except she's a doctor, and a good one, who pays attention to patients not just charts and tries to keep people calm and stuff. So that's her solution already, be a really good doctor. Travel with the doctor doesn't really solve anything. All she has to do is go back and pass her exams. And the ending she's got? Made the family thing hugely worse! Well, okay, they had to live her new life for a while, but then that made them all messed up so Martha was stuck in the middle looking after them again. Woe. This is why it's a middle not an ending... unless it's a very bad ending playing into nasty stereotypes.
So if I play with canon companions I either can't find their question or it has been answered wrong already. Companions I make up I can make up a good question and a better answer.
