Character ages

So, Torchwood magazine: profiles on each character, including their d.o.b. (except the ever mysterious Jack)

Gwen 16/08/78
Owen 14/02/80
Tosh 18/09/81
Ianto 02/12/82

Lots of other stuff too, so everyone will buy the cool data source.
If these are correct, all characters are younger than me. Which isn't precisely how I was thinking of them, except Ianto. Figuring out their ages means figuring out the year Torchwood is in now - no easy feat, with contradictory data around - but it's possible they're none of them 30 yet. Also, while Ianto is indeed the youngest, he's hardly the baby when their ages line up like that.

Other data: Gwen's a Leo, Tosh is a Virgo, and Owen was born on 14th Feb :eyeroll:

I'd guessed the actor's ages rightish, relative to me, at least if imdb and wiki are to be believed - BG 1974, NM 1975, EM 1978, GDL 1981. Which put my idea of the character's relative ages off by quite a bit, apparently.

I'd always figured Tosh was 32 or 33, Owen was maybe 34 or 35, Gwen was 29 or 30, and Ianto was around 25. I just realized that that matches up pretty well with actor ages. Go me.

MARY: Toshiko Sato. Born in London, 1975, moved to Osaka when you were two, then back to the UK in 1986. Parents in the RAF, grandfather worked at Bletchley Park. Very impressive. University... blah-blah, snapped up to Government science think tank when you were 20, recruited to Torchwood three years ago.

Wow Ianto is as old as my big brother, that's fabulous! And wow on the others too being so young~ Owen's gone through all his medical training and been staffed long enough to go through all that to be an officially titled Doctor?

Yeah, I just looked things up and did maths and I don't see how Owen could be all qualified if that's his birth year. Unless Torchwood is set far in the future.

SWEET, Ianto's a fellow Sagittarius! XD And his birthday is four days after mine. So he'd be JUST under four years older than me. Awesome XD

Must admit, though - I did expect Owen and Tosh to be older, especially considering the above comment from Mary *shrug* Oh well!

I think Owen's too young as well, as he's had and he get qualifications and be fired from at least one hospital and to be working at Torchwood at least as long as Toshiko. It could be done, but it's really compressed.

I looked up on the British Medical Association website and found a plan that says how to be a doctor. 5 years undergrad, 2 foundation, minimum 3 postgrad. If he starts at 18 that makes him 28 before he's fully qualified. Emergency Medicine has 3 years plus... at least one more? Botheration, it's complicated to look up. Now all that data was for starting training now, but even then... he's too young, if he was born in 80 and actually qualified before working at Torchwood. BG would be old enough, Owen apparently is not. Unless I've misunderstood or done the math wrong.

Umm... Didn't Mary say that Tosh was born 1975? And she was talking about her age gap with Tommy- in my opinion 3 years isn't an age gap. And there's no way Gwen is the oldest! Owen and Tosh are definitely older than her.

According to Fragments: Ianto Jones, born August 19th 1983.
So either Jack looked up the wrong Ianto Jones (and Mary got the wrong Toshiko Sato) or the Torchwood Magazine dates are, well, just made up, possibly at random.

But season 2 does seem to treat Gwen like she's senior to the others in some way, and age is the only possible.

Yeah that makes sense. Just when I saw that the first time I was like, "Really?" I think what messed me up were Tosh and Owen's ages. They seem a bit off, there. Who knows though really.
