Feb. 19th, 2008 06:52 pmI'm reading a Tanya Huff book that isn't any like the other TH books. Wizard of the Grove. It's on page 120 and it has thus far read as a series of short stories, all entirely pointless. Plus it has this whole recurring thing where immortal-and-prettier-than-thou falls in love and then dies along with their mortal beloved. It's messed up and creepy and so damn teenage. And then I read when the copyright was from, and it said 1988.
... yup.
*shudders*
Also, the apparent point of the first 120 pages was to introduce the More Special Than Everyone special magic baby girl. She's called Crystal. If this was fanfic I'd have put the thing down many pages ago.
So far everyone has been falling in love in neatly matched het pairs.
And also, with their cousins. Um, eew? I mean, once or twice, whatever, but over several generations? Well, they are royalty.
Actually I haven't been paying enough attention to even know how many generations. It has no attention grabbing characteristics whatsoever. I mean, it has a beautiful immortal lady whose tears literally turn into precious gems. It's reminding me so much of all the fic I knew better than to show anybody even when I was 17. Eesh.
Where's the boykissing? Where's the funny? Where's the being unlike everyone's distilled version of high fantasy ala high school?
I'm about ready to give up on it, really. Just I already bought it, so feel like I might as well keep reading.
Actually, what keeps grabbing my attention instead is the idea of Owen at a Buffy convention breaking into James Marsters' hotel room.
The intricate labyrinth that is my subconscious sometimes just makes me *facepalm*, really it do.

Date: 2008-02-19 09:05 pm (UTC)I know there's a fairy tale like this. One girl visits a glade or something and then cries pearls and diamonds and rose petals. Her evil sister then does the same thing, only cries snakes and toads.
