I started with a collection of Ethan resources in the rayne_n_chaos community here.
Then I went to Google to search for "Ethan Rayne" and collect all the fic I found there.

My grand huge project now has three parts
First of the Google harvest
Googling Ethan, part the second
Ethan fic 3, now with sex
And the linkage continues - I'm rating stories on the basis of whether or not they have Ethan in them. No Ethan and even the greatest masterpiece won't get a mention.


I found a couple stories at Be Seeing You that are new since last time I checked the archive, both by Avvie, buffyavatarfan. Fluff, but Ethan and Giles fluff.

I have no idea what is going on in this. Ethan appears, Joyce pulls a gun on him and says she is going to do some magic. The rest is presumably in the other parts of the story. Jumping in in the middle is usually confusing and rarely encourages me to read the rest.

Ethan is a bad guy. He appears briefly at the start so they know it is him, then gets complained about a lot, then appears again in chapter 9 to try and sacrifice Buffy so he can serve a demon for all eternity.
Immortality is nifty, but I don't really see Ethan volunteering to be anyone's slave.

needs spellchecking and... what's the American of Brit picking?
Ethan and Giles are all competitive and making with the 'old' comments, and then settle in for a drinking competition, basically forgetting about their dates. This version of those pairings I can live with. (er, no insult to people that like them, I'm just kind of 'het, eew!' sometimes)
But then Buffy and Willow go get changed into their best hookerwear and get the guys attention again. And start dancing sexy to make them jealous. So Giles beats up the random bloke.
Really, its like they youthed at least thirty years.
But no noticeable presence of magic, so presumably it was just alcohol and habit.
Kind of lite, but fun in a way.

Ethan is in a cell in Nevada when Wolverine is brought in and the X-men bust him out. And leave Ethan behind. Way heroic.
Then the government send Ethan to catch Nighthawk, with a bomb tuned to Nighthawk's brainwaves. Which he drops off and teleports away from.
That is all the Ethan there is. Really not an Ethan fic.
Apparently not a Xander fic either, since along with mutant powers he gets amnesia and a personality transplant, rebooting as soldier-boy from Halloween.
Which only leaves me to wonder why this was written as Buffy fic in the first place.

Summary: In an alternate version of "Halloween," Ethan includes an odd costume that is selected by Xander, with astonishing results.
Xander chooses a Samurai costume, and becomes Xander-sue of uber competence. The new personality completely overwrites him, and stays once the Janus is broken. Ethan meets a fiery death, then the flames turn into a bad dragon. The dragon and the samurai, both non-BtVS characters, duel to the death with no intervention from BtVS characters. The samurai wins. Ethan stays dead. Xander gets to keep all the skills once the alter personality leaves.
Not an Ethan fic.
Not a BtVS fic either.

another alternate Halloween.
someone turns up with knowledge of the future and gets assorted people to do slightly different. Xander and Cordy get different costumes and become Xander-sue and Cordy-sue! Er, I mean, Connor MacLeod and Lara Croft. Except he isn't really very Connor. But handily both of them are left with all their skills when they change back. Sword fighting, gun play, aerial ballet (?!?). They kill Spike and Dru that Halloween, because Spike listens to Dru when she says that everything will change but ignores her when she adds that they'll die because of it. Because Spike is dead, there is only ever one vampire with a soul, Angel, who dies closing the Hellmouth. Cordy and Xander left long since, as C got her doctorate in archaeology and made a ton of money on the stock market. They are in Egypt having their happily ever after.
Also, this is not an Ethan fic. It even makes the Halloween stunt be on the seers orders, with a precisely timed finish that shortcircuits the G-E interaction.

This one has plot. Lots of things happen.
Spike meets Harmony in London, goes hunting for the information that will lead him to the gem of amarra, and pisses off the Council. This story has an interesting and original view of how the Council operates. Makes them out to be mostly competent, scary and everywhere, but just a little complacent and set in their ways. Nice, plausible mixture.
This story is intermittently incredibly gory and violent. Slaughter and torture.
Ethan is in this, being tricksy, getting beat up, and trying to run away. I like the tricks, though they don't always seem quite his kind of magic, mostly mind control. It seems to me that if Ethan could do mind control magic he would have far fewer problems. But the results are fun. Well, unfortunate for the people involved, but inventive.

I read it, and while I'm fairly sure I'd get more out of it if I read more widely, I rather like the story anyway. Gandalf's rules are good ones.

Ethan turns up briefly to provide show and tell. The story is basically from SG1's viewpoint. But it is excellent, really carefully put together. The evidence that leads SG1 into the BtVS world is plausible and interesting. The characters they meet are appropriate, in character, reacting believably. SG1 are all business but also definitely themselves. This is *good*. I don't even mind that Ethan was only there briefly. I like the story they're telling.
Now the only problem is I don't know any better way to check for updates than to go back to that page and reload a lot. Suggestions?

Middle of a story again. Seems to have gone a long way from canon. Vampire Willow and Vampire Giles. Ethan helps them because as vampires he has a better chance at shagging both of them. Oh, and the whole not wanting the world to end thing.
Ethan also says 'ducks'. I don't know anyone outside of bad films that calls anyone 'ducks'.
I don't follow the plot, I'd have to start at the start (um, surprise :eyeroll:) Can't tell if Ethan is in character or not.

Also to note - I'm skipping all the Harry Potter crossovers. There seem to be many of them. But those books irritate me greatly, so I have no wish to read fic based on them.

This week there are only 10900 Ethan Rayne links, and after 319 links from geocities.com Googles said it ignored a bunch that are very similar. Given that the ones they listed included the same story multiple times, I don't know what they mean by 'very similar', but I thought I'd try going back to the main list.

I've looked at at least 600 links, probably closer to 1000.
no wonder I'm tired.

The fics from "Lizz" are my old, old, OLD AND BAD ones. The ones that need rewriting so very badly. The ones that are off my site but apparently are archived elsewhere as well. Oi. *hides under a rock* LIR has at least 4 installements.

old fic always looks unsatisfactory compared to new abilities. I'm sure you can write them better now, but even as is I found them readable. Even said 'interesting' *points up page*.

fic seems to breed like those plants that set roots wherever they touch. Spreads out all on its own.

If it is any consolation I can't find a working link to anything but that first part.

I haven't listed individually the fics that are on archives or sites that I listed on the rayne_n_chaos Ethan resource post, or that are in my LJ memories. But I'm sure even accounting for those there are fics I haven't listed.
11,000 hits on google. Okay, not all stories, and many are repeats or different bits of multi part epics, but thats still a whole lot of writing.
