Torchwood's Season 3? We Do Know Jack
Tired of all the rumors surrounding Torchwood's future, TVGuide.com went directly to the rift, er, Cardiff, Wales, to learn if the truth was out there.
Well, 'Woodies (or Torchies, if you prefer), scripts for Season 3 are currently being developed and filming should start in the middle of August for airing on BBC1 in the spring of 2009. Best news of all, John Barrowman will return as the dashing bi-sexual adventurer. Though keeping more details close to the vest, executive producer Julie Gardner vows that fans "will be pleased with the casting." That better mean Eve Myles is returning!
Fans, however, may not be so happy with the mere five hours slated for next season. "We've decided to do a five-part mini-series, one big story that will run during one week," says Gardner, adding, "I wanted to make a really big noise about the show."
So far, the BBC has only green lit these five hours, but there could be more, we're told. When (or even whether) BBC America will run the mini-series has yet to be decided. — Ileane Rudolph

And, okay, 5 is not 13 and more could be better - but: We have a show which people watch and a channel that wants to make it and hey, look, they're making it! Yaays!
5 in one week sounds interesting. Quite a different impact to a 13 week season. It'd have to get big advertising in advance so people know how to watch the unusual schedule. It couldn't be interrupted by unexpected sports or eurovision, cause they could pick the week carefully. It would get a different lead in and follow up programme every night. The audience routines would vary cause few people do the same thing every single night all week. I have no clue what this would do to ratings but it would be... interesting and different.
And, yeah, I fear cancellation as much as the next fan, but hey, we has episodes next year! Win!
On a casting front: If it's going to run as a mini series, 'guest stars' could be in all 5 episodes without being regular members of the Torchwood Institute team. It could be a chance to try stuff out, or a chance to xover with DW characters. And, yeah, if Ianto stays 5th because a couple of DW characters get slotted in as cooler than him, I will pout and sulk. But whoever we get has to be introduced fast, without using up 1/5th of the 'season' on introductions, so returns of characters we already know but having them function in a different framework sounds good to me. Or, they could just have the 3 we know about and them get more time to be awesome.
What I want to know is: What time of night? What audience are they aiming at? And is our dark and nasty adult Torchwood going to be ever more a thing of the past?
... I liked it when Torchwood were bad guys and shot each other. It's cutting out half the drama source to have the team actually get on with each other. Backstabbing FTW!
7pm repeats were fine and good, but actually only aiming at a 7pm audience? No more orgies! Where's the fun?

if rephrase as 'I be wantin more Torchwood', be agreeing.
but would add 'please'
Since it is the BBC and they do get a whole bunch of my money I have interesting position in the whole money-for-services equation to be saying please quite loudly, but so does whole rest of UK, and therefore shows have to be making sense with money-per-viewer-per-episode. I don't have the figures to know if TW does that. If it is more expensive than other BBC output and gets only same viewers, well, money argument doesn't work. Public interest argument is interesting one.
um, I'm seeing this announcement through my college classes
and also some people being very rude and grumpy about this in other places.
not telling you how to react :)
But - we can has Torchwood! 5 whole hours! Yaayness!
