Went to see Hancock at the local cinema. Good thing: left house ten minutes before film, got back ten minutes after. Bad thing: every time I go I get reminded why I dont go more often. Screen about the same size as I've got at home, once you factor the distance in, and if there are other people in there they're either half my age or twice it. Not inherently bad, but they often have no good manners. Nobody threw things at my hat this time, but things got thrown at the screen early on and it took a while for them to go quiet. Blah.

The actual film?
... odd.
Two films, awkwardly glued together.

There's one complete story arc where the alcoholic arsehole we meet in the first few minutes gets redeemed by associating with a PR guy. Which works. I liked that film.

Then there's the one where he has an origin story where he's secretly an angel but if he falls in love they'll both die.
... WTF was that film on?

I mean, on the way home I turned it around until I didn't hate the idea. Because the idea that falling in love with an alcoholic arsehole drains your power and probly get you killed, that is not a bad idea. Awkward after they've kind of fixed him to read it that way, but I'd have no objection to that message.

But the idea that him falling in love with her makes him power go away?
*facepalm*

Also, the repeated use of homo as an insult needs to be redeemed with some canon slash as the guy comes out and stops being so grumpy all the time. The big heart thing at the end very nearly goes there, but, still.

And then it would be 'fate wants us to be heterosexual but it would mess up our lives', which I could also live with.

Is interesting that only the first (half of them) film was what the adverts were about. Made the other half seem even more tacked on.

Verdict: Structural issues like woah, loss of feminism points especially in the has only one named female character thing, but on the whole doesn't entirely suck.
