I have two DVD covers signed by Tom Baker :-)
I stood in line. In the cold. For two hours.
After a while I could not feel my feet. Which was nice, cause then they couldn't hurt.
My hip, however, managed to make its displeasure known quite well.
but I stood in line, and chatted to the guy next to me, and made appropriate approving nods to the learning disabled guy in front of me who had drawn a Dalek in crayon in art class and was going to give it to the Doctor and, generally, behaved like a normal-for-signings person.
Given that this is the 1 year anniversary of the first Tom Baker signing, and hence 1 year since my social outings employee started, and that last time he was here I had to have someone with me just so I could go stand among all that busy busy, this is made of pure win
So I am brave. And aching in most joints now. Yet mighty.
Also while I was in town I went and got lunch in the mall, which a year ago I would have paniced just to think about much less attempt, but this time I just got there and wandered around and wondered where people actually go to buy MP3 players and gave up and went up the lift to the food court to get fries and realised the line was a bit ridiculous and went and got baked beans and potato instead. Which has a whole lot more actual potato than fries would have.
... I still crave fries. I don't know what they put on them, but it makes you want moooooore.
So after food I wandered some more, didn't buy anything, went back outside, went along to Bravissimo and failed to buy anything because sports bras don't go up to my size any more ( *sulk* ), wandered some more and went to Innanas Festival and, er, spilled a whole basket of stuff on the floor cause I was attempting to pick it up because by then my hip *really* didn't want to try down, but they were very sympathetic and picked it all up and put it on the counter for me to go through. I bought three pouches. None of them are exactly like the pouch I've been wearing until the corners wore through. Two might do for that function, though they're different sizes and fabrics and I'll have to see how tough they are first. The third I couldn't think of any earthly use for, but it is made of purple mesh and has stars on it in silver blobby stuff and is just the cutest thing, so I bought it anyway.
Then I wandered some more, decided against goth clothes shopping because I was wearing half a dozen layers and none of them stylish, and decided what I really needed before I went home was an MP3 player. So I found a shop that sells all sorts of electricals and wandered until I could ask very dumb questions of a sales guy. The sales guy possibly thought I was a bit too dumb, because he showed me the most expensive Apple model, the sort with a screen and all the complicateds that costs more than a hundred pounds, and then explained why none of the others could play audiobooks nope no never work. So I walked out and found another shop. I don't know if he was actively taking the piss or if he was right from the selection in there, but a guy that starts at the most expensive model is not encouraging trust. There were ones there for £10, and they appeared to have the same functions he was saying the big one had, but he said they didn't. Either my eyes are wrong or... well, anyway, I left that shop.
I got fed up and stomped along to Borders for a sit down. Only Borders has gone and rearranged things so theres a lot more shelves and the seats are all hiding. I finally found one next to the graphic novels, but I'm sure there were more last time. So, anyway, had a sit. Asked at the info desk if they sold anything that could play the audiobooks they were selling. They said no, but try HMV. So I tried HMV, and the bewildering variety persisted. So I picked up the two cheapest ones and went over to the pay counter and was puzzled at them. They talked me out of the slightly more expensive one and sold me the cheapest. £17.99 and they reckon it'll work fine for audiobooks. Got a little screen and 2Gb memory. I've put Pest Control, Hidden, and Everyone Says Hello on it already. Which are three I've already listened to, but I have them ripped already. I'll add some Big Finish Audios in a bit. Once I know the thing actually works so the effort is worth it. The instructions say let it charge up for 4 hours before using it the first time, so it's sitting there plugged in to my computer.
I feel like such a... out of the loop old person. I mean, the last time I bought a portable music device, it played casettes. I've just not had a need for one. So that leaves me going in there asking the incredibly obvious questions because I don't really know what the difference is between one teeny tiny little box thingy and another.
The one I bought costs about as much as a DVD. Also less than I usually carry for taxi money. So I'll be comfortable carrying it around. This would not be true of the other models with the big shiny everythings.
Actually there were some little covers made of mostly shiny. If this thing works I could accessorise. Cool
So, after that I caught the bus back. Except I accidentally q jumped. I did not mean to. I just needed a seat at the bus stop. And of course the only one available was the one some bloke had left empty right by the old people at the front of the line. So I sat there, fully intending to wait for the back of the line to catch up with me. Only then all the nice people in line on the bench behind me kept stopping to let me get in line, and I realised I'd actually cause less delay if I just got up and got on the bus, rather than trying to explain to them all. Which was fine, working plan, got on the bus and got a seat. Only then it turns out the bus with the wheelchair seat and the extra space between seats, lovely as it is to sit in, has a lower capacity than the usual sardine can... and ran out of seats before it ran out of passengers. So there was I having pushed in and got a seat and there were people outside left waiting for the next one and I don't know if they were people I should have let go in front. Guilty now. But I don't really see how I could improve on that, aside from having a hip that would have stood for another half hour after the morning I'd just had. So, did my best. Shall have to pay forward the karma at next opportunity.
So after all that wandering around I have 3 pairs of rainbow stripe socks, 2 DVD covers signed by Tom Baker, and 1 MP3 player.
And I did all that on my own.

Your socks, also, are a point of jealousy for me. I have but one pair of rainbow stripe socks.
