Because insomnia bites, I listen to audio adventures instead.
Loups Garoux, 5 and Turlough vs werewolves :-D

It was even more fun than it sounded.

It had a proper plot and characters and stuff. I find I'm taking that for granted on these audios, which tells you something about either their consistency or my luck with finding shiny ones. Character was revealed through action. And best of all we weren't just wandering around watching the plot of the week, we got stuck in and saw how it reflected on 5 and Turlough too.

They go to Rio for Carnival. The two of them. And then when girl tries to dance with the Doctor he's all awkward ah er um and basically not a dancing with girls guy.

... I got a strong mental image of him dancing with Turlough. It was sort of distracting.

So then that unexpected/awkward advances from girls thing turns out to be a theme, and they both acquire unexpected girlfriend. Which doesn't make things less slashy. Because, accidental. And awkward. And leading to a stuttery sort of conversation, in Turlough's room, where each tries to explain to the other that It's Not Like That, and - and this is possibly the most win ever - the Doctor tries to get advice from Turlough about girls because, despite a very long list of girls-that-were-friends, he's never really got the hang of that sort of thing.

Hovers happily between slashy as can be and really quite hilarious.

So the interpersonal level between the known characters works real well.

The new characters are interesting too. Some very international accents. Which felt a bit over egged until I thought about it connecting to themes and, again, stuff about the Doctor and Turlough. The thing where they're both aliens was repeatedly emphasised, central, and also how they're both exiles, and outsiders wherever they go, including their home world. So from the supporting cast we get accents enough to ensure they're all from somewhere else, but also that they're all from all over the Earth, like a united nations in wolf.

There was a thing about carrying home in your head, spirits of the forest, that was interesting.

There was a theme level where the werewolves weren't just wolves, they were representing the danger of uncontrolled appetite, by way of the 2080 setting where the Amazon rainforest has become the Amazon dustbowl.

And all that got woven together while there was a lot of running away from and being captured by big bitey monsters.

The bits where the Doctor gets clever with technology, does TARDIS tricks, improvises with available bits of scenery (harder to manage in audio but it works well enough), and all that other Doctor stuff are good too.

And the little details that build the future Earth while keeping plenty enough of the familiar to keep it in the background, those were good too. And how the background flavour details all ended up playing a part.

It was a good, well constructed, interesting, long enough to really get stuck into it adventure.

The bits with nearly turning into werewolves were bonus, really.

I'm going to listen to this one again later. It will have definite relisten value.

Now I want more like this.
But there's only 2 more with Turlough.
*pout*

probly more by writer Marc Platt. I'm still getting the hang of the search function and numbering though, so while the search turns up manymany results, I'll be a while figuring out what they all lead to.

oh, one of them is Spare Parts. I've heard of that one. As soon as I can figure out how to make the subscribe offer on the bit of paper work I'll be ordering the ones leading up to and including that. Cool.

Wiki says "He wrote the Doctor Who serial Ghost Light"
I really liked that one.

Wiki is also helpful on the wrote-what issue.

... lately I feel like this fandom takes a lot of research. I mean, most things, I just buy all the DVDs and watch the episodes in order. This, for Doctor Who, is technically possible, though time consuming. But it's not the most rewarding way. So you learn to pick and mix from the DVDs. And then I discover the audios, which have been existing for so long there's bazillions of them, and were written in such a way that starting at the start just isn't a theoretical possibility at all. So it's all figuring out what I need to figure out and then figuring that out. Or, more likely, buying things at random cause they look shiny.
