Happy!

I love it when I watch ones I remember and they're still good. There's always this moment where you're left wondering if it was only That good because you were 12 at the time. And, well, yes, okay, but my inner 12 year old is still around! Also, it is in fact Quite Good.

Brigadier Bambera! Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart!
Ancelyn and Ace, Merlin and Morgaine

We have a story where fully half the named characters are women, and they talk to each other, and are important to the plot, and sometimes women are in charge of men, and this was in 1989, and why is it I still have to count this kind of thing to check it's there?
And we have a black lady in charge of UNIT.
And she's not the only not-white person in the story.
And nobody stands around going 'but you're not white you no can has in charge!' at anyone, because it's totally not a thing.
And old!Brigadier is just a bit fail trying to give orders to new!Brigadier and crunching into gender issues, but he knows it, and has :-( and oops, as is appropriate.

And, importantly, Knights With Swords vs UNIT in blue berets! Things blowing up!
And a Big Scary Demon that was in fact Big and Demonic and quite a bit Scary, and looked just rather cool, even with being blue. Blue is a tricky one to make work. But it was a gorgeous sculpt there.

I watched the disc 2 new version. I can't remember which bits are new bits. I suspect they're the bits that make it a bit not make sense sometimes. Not in big ways, just little things that people have had an opportunity to notice already turning out to surprise them.
... this being Doctor Who it's entirely possible those were in the original version too.

Later I shall watch the disc 1 version like I watched when I was little. Only on a TV that could fit, hmmm, 4, maybe 6 of the little TV I had then in it. I watch it just now and felt vaguely that I should be sitting with my nose nearly on the screen of my tiny bedroom TV instead of all the way across the room with my wide screen giant.

Even without the nostalgia trip, I like the story that loops time on itself, I like everyone recognising the Doctor so there's things he doesn't even know about himself, I like the speech at the end about war not having honor, I like all the soldier stuff, I love the Brigadiers, I especially love "Magnificent!" and "Art thou betrothed?", and I still love Ace and her girlfriend of the story. They're so cute joking about blowing stuff up. And then the hug after they beat the evil mind control of induced racism (because only evil mind control would make those kinds of words). And the Doctor and Ace are 7&Ace 4eva, clearly, with "Aces are rare" and timing and ace up his sleeve. Ace is win.

Doctor Who is win.

I love Battlefield. It was, and still is, one of my Fave Seventh Doctor stories, and it has Bessie too!
