stupid

So I tried to play that 'Matrix' game on the gamecube my brother gave me for xmas without any games.
It turns out it is also without any... thingies, memory things, saves games on them.
So I can pause, but not save.
And it asks me if I want to save very often. And yes, I do want to save, but I have been given this item and it apparently doesn't have all the parts, so, no.

So the next thing I find out is the stupid controller has 7 buttons. 7. And two twiddlers and a x thing. Yes, I don't even know a right word for them. Twiddlers like really short joysticks. ANYway. 7 buttons. And you actually need to use them all to get the stupid character to do much of anything. And I hadn't even noticed three of them were there until then.

So I figure which button is for punching someone - or possibly kicking, I was never quite clear - and decide this is ample to my mood. So I start playing on Easy. I read the instructions too, really, but they're tiny and hide important things like 'open doors' in the middle of a paragraph. And why can't you just kick the damn door down if you feel like it? This is the Matrix, you can leap tall buildings in a single bound, don't tell me the door is beyond me! And then I discover that little thing up the top of the screen that has thus far been red is in fact an *arrow*, and if I follow where it points the game is much more violent and less frustrating, and hey, how about that.

So I keep playing for a while, and eventually reach a level where police are shooting at me, and I can't kick them from over here and I'm going to get shot a lot and I still can't run in a straight line anyway because have I mentioned this twiddler doesn't do what I want? It presumably does what I tell it, but that involves running full tilt at weird angles and not, apparently, walking in a straight line. So then I try and figure out how to use the gun, and it has sights that wobble around all over the place, and it's even more of a bugger than running. And eventually I shoot one stupid police, and why am I shooting police again anyway? I'm not a shooting police kind of person. I couldn't just be sneaky? Well if there was a sneaky option it probably requires more finesse and less kicking, so, no. So, anyway, manage to shoot one police, and the helpful tip pops up telling me it'll tell me how to reload.

At this point I realise two important things.

1) I am really really bad at this game.

2) I feel really really sick.
Like, stop the car now let me out hot/cold icky sick.

WTF?

So I don't see how the feeling sick is causally connected to the computer game, but it was definitely time to stop playing the stupid thing.

So then I went to have a lie down, which would have worked better if I wasn't feeling quite so sick, but I fell asleep anyway. So now I feel much better.

I still quite like the idea of playing games sometime. If I wake up feeling really annoyed it is better to punch pixels than be grumpy at the universe. But I think I need a game that uses less buttons. And is possibly aimed at 4 year olds. Who will still be better at it than me.

I share your frustration - most videogames seem too much like hard work to be fun for me.

You can get the memory chips super cheap, probably from game cave in Dereham just down from the library.

Also, I recommend that you try turned based fighting and RPGs. You HAVE to get Skies of Arcadia. It has pirates in air ships and plot and fan fiction.

xx
