Torchwood spoilers

I have bitter. Bitter lols followed by crying, in this case.

6) So they're using some chemical in the kids as a drug. Question #1: why does it have to be kids, not adults? Does it have to do with the hormones released at puberty? Question #2: How did they figure this out in the first place? In 1965 they just came out of nowhere and said "we want 12 kids" -- what, just at random? Is this like some stupid stoner slacker thing, "duuuuuude, let's just smoke up this kid and see if we can get high off it!"

... yeah, no, funny, sick.

The 456 and their actions drove the story. So you'd think they'd make sense once you've got all the pieces. But I can't twist them to fit.

Why do the 456 talk to the politicians? Why do they talk to the people of Earth at all? Why do they play head games and go back on deals? Why did they seem to be pushing for everything to be as public as possible? Why, for goodness sake, did they make all the children say "We are coming"?

... was it the alien stoner equivalent of drunk dialing? Prank call the planet...

I can't make it make sense. If they need cooperation they went about it in the worst way. If they need things widely, globally, known then they went about it in a wildly inefficient way. They contact every child on Earth and only one government? They make demands globally but only talk locally? They negotiate with one leader yet have precise enough data on planet earth to calculate a different 10% of the population for each country?

It doesn't make sense.

If their goal was to get children.

They have a teleport. Why do they need cooperation? Children congregate in large numbers in purpose made buildings. They don't need to go on a bus to anywhere, they're already gathered together. Why can't the pillar of fire pick them out of the school buildings?

Why do they make a demand that requires every single country on the planet to behave in the way they want? Why does the story ignore all the other countries? Doesn't bloody matter if Britain has its 325000 if the 456 are going to release a plague because somewhere on another continent a small country with no trust of English speakers and no connection to the negotiations doesn't do anything.

It can't be they need to gather children to get only children. They could control only children. They could make them all stand still together. Why couldn't they pick them all up?
Why would they care if they got some stray adults?

Why does the story not think we need explanations?

If the goal of the aliens was to expose the nastier side of humans they were making with the great plan. If they wanted to expose Britain's dark deal in the past, good plan. If they wanted to make sure everyone saw how they were treating children, good plan.

If they actually wanted children to take away and turn into drug factories?
Bloody ridiculous deeply bad very useless plan.

I can't make sense of it.
I can't see why they communicated through the children.
I can't see why they communicated at all.

I seriously cannot see why they transported one alien to planet Earth and put it in a tank.
They only needed to talk, they weren't really in the same room anyway, why the hell do anything face to tank?

They could show them the kid that way.

If they actually wanted more children, that would be vastly and immediately obviously stupid.

Telling the truth is obviously stupid.

Why say 'oh hai they're drugs' at all?

Because they're mean cruel aliens and they think they've won
and they're drug addicts so they don't have to make sense
and they're doing it all for the LOLs???

I cannot make their motives or actions line up.

And that makes the ending really not work.

I mean, there has to be logic somewhere.

Maybe they're suicidal aliens. They sent out a kill signal while being recorded. Suicidal.

When, after episode 4, I followed the threads I could see I came up with 'abducted children are bitter, come back to expose Britain, all the problems secretly caused by the humans'.
I still reckon that makes more sense than what we got.

But the element absolutely essential to the ending, the two way communication...
... where was that set up?

I thought the plot fell apart a bit at that point. And I also couldn't help but think, how did they get addicted on just 12 children for all this time, but now need millions. And that was a horrible thought I didn't like having in my head. I'd have preferred some other answer.
