Plot bunny (of Denial? Not really.)
Jul. 11th, 2009 04:53 amTorchwood spoilers. and old Doctor Who ones.
Someone mentioned about parallel universes and Ianto.
We got some indications that Ianto's background is inconsistent. The story about his dad the tailor. The story about his dad taking him to the cinema which was actually closed at the time according to the website. Some bits from a book about his dad thinking office work isn't a real job. Going camping with Lisa when Ianto hates camping.
Ianto was at Torchwood One. When the Cybermen came through from an alternate universe.
... what if they weren't the only ones?
Ianto is the Pete's World Ianto Jones, stranded here in the middle of the battle.
This world is his gingerbread house, almost but not quite like he remembers.
Maybe full of chances to have another go and get things right.
Lisa wouldn't know. He wouldn't necessarily know if she was his Lisa. And even if she wasn't, she was close enough to hurt. Better yet, if Lisa in Pete's World was cyberconverted too and just vanished, and this is his second chance to save her...
All those times when his memory matches someone here? Like the Gran living in the same house and the stairs with the wonky carpet. Some things remain.
Everything else?
Ianto Jones, main timeline origin, after the battle, finds himself in the universe the Cybermen came from, and makes the best of it. Since they're both Ianto his best is pretty good.
No, this doesn't fix anything, it just complicates it wonderfully.
Of course there are Ianto Jones in other universes. Any number of fics could get one of them in to heartbroken Jack worlds.
But what if you came back to your home timeline and found out that while you were away your replacement was (a) a big damn hero and (b) queer, and out to your family?
It wouldn't have the same twist if it wasn't returning home. Dealing with someone else's past is a whole different story. Interesting too of course.
But seeing what someone did with your own already life? Hmmm...
PS: Of course I know that Ianto the con man makes perfect consistent sense, romanticising his life and trying to pass. That's a good story too. We can tell that one as well.
