Watched 'Hard Target'. Good things: Two black speaking characters with names. Bit of social commentary with the rich vs poor bit, albeit about as subtle as you'd expect from a things-go-boom movie. Bad things: Two dead black speaking characters. A damsel in distress who stays a damsel. There's one point where she picks up a gun and defends herself, but one of the guys takes it away and says he'll defend her. Which is pretty much how he gets stabbed and she gets taken hostage, which complicates that one nicely. But I miss martial arts movies where more than one person can kick arse. If everyone shines then the stand out has to be spectacular. Raises everyone's game.
There were some neat bits with use of reflections. Awareness of environment, being sneaky.
The bit where someone staggers down the street all 'help me' and everyone ignores them or tells them to get a job will always be effective. Depressing. But I liked the bit where ignoring him gets them all shot too. That's just messagey and karmic.
There was a moment when the sympathy of the surroundings changed sides. In the city the buildings were at best neutral and the people were unhelpful or hostile. Once Chance gets to his own ground, out in the country, it's all working on his side. Change of sides announced by a snake that could have worked better. But it was interesting. Always the land is on the side of the good guys, surroundings work for them. Also it helped when it got to someone's home and they'd set up traps.
I like things going boom.
That's pretty much it.
Action movies are not easy to write even when there's stretches with no speaking. Don't reckon the writer goes 'and then there's a fight and things go boom'.
... if they do, that sounds much easier job...
