Just finished re-reading 'Ethan of Athos'
a book that is about a panet all of men, and the reproduction doctor who goes out into the galaxy to fetch back ovaries.
The main character, Ethan, is initially dating a guy called Janos.
odd connections.
It was published in 1986. I'm vaguely wondering if it lurked in someone's subconscious.

That's really odd.
I read that book ages ago, so I didn't remember that there is someone called Janos in there... Hmmm. Makes you kind of wonder...

What I think was lurking in someone's mind was the Hellblazer comics with John Constantine. Giles and John Constantine share a horrific demon raising episode in their origin stories. When I first saw the episode discussing Eyghon I thought it overly resembled Constantine's memories of the events at Newcastle. (Of course I also am convinced that Harry Potter is actually a plagarization of Tim Hunter from the Books of Magic.)

I've seen that theory before, JC=Giles, and I just don't see it. The punk connection is something anyone who studied British Cultural Studies would come up with, or could be reached by basic association. The right age of rebel. Newcastle was an exorcism, not a deliberate possession, involving a child, not adults, and does not to me share any details with Eyghon. I thought Eyghon was basic drug overdose and flashback, Buffyverse style.

Harry Potter is derivative, but I haven't read the Books of Magic to say if it is drawing on that as well.

Well, Janos and Janus aren't quite the same word. I have often wondered why they picked Janus though as he has sod all to do with Chaos. He works well with Ethan however -- the idea that people chose the trouble they seemingly fall into.

Yes, I do agree with agilesreader. I've been aware of the JC similarities from first showing of The Dark Age over here. The Eyghon story is just so similar to what happened to John and his mates in Newcastle.

Newcastle was an exorcism that went wrong. A small child got killed. John ended up running through hell and drove himself nuts. He summoned a demon using the wrong name and therefore couldn't control it. Basically no details overlap. Unless 'demon' counts as a detail rather than a genre. I thought the Eyghon story was basic metaphor, drug overdose and flashback, buffyverse style. Nowt to do with JC.

JC went to LOndon and joined a crappy punk rock band. He messed with dark magic. He got cocky. He summoned a demon he couldn't control. There were fatal results. It really isn't that hard to see the parallels, you know. :)

The Eyghon story is not a straight copy of Hellblazer, any more than Dark Willow is a straight copy of Dark Phoenix, but it's a fact that Joss and many of his team have been comics geeks for years and the influence is obvious.

And obviously, I'm talking about Hellblazer and not sacrilegious Keanu movies. *cough*

It is possible those things lurked in writer stew somewhere
but I've seen people elsewhere say it was plain copied
and I've started to over react to that suggestion

elements went into the writer stew - the time, the location, the genre - and I think similar stories can be drawn out of that without one story coming from the other.

Also the punk band thing is fanon based on prop canon. Remove the punk bit and the rest is standard horror. So I figure, not necessarily Constantine related.
