I said on the S3 board but I say again here
on the way in to college today I saw Torchwood advertised on the side of buses
twice.

Captain Jack is really, really big.

Was stood there all heroic, with gun stretched out.

Thing is, buses around here are all colors. So one ad was on a blue bus background, and the other was on pink.

The difference in effect was... interesting.

Great Expectations on DVD, black and white with John Mills
Watched on the computer because I expect it would look terrible on the 32"

Okay, I think I really *hate* that version. I mean it was bad enough in the book, but at least there was some doubt about it. Now it makes it all about the 'romance', all about Pip, and... *shudders*

Wrong! Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

... I have definite opinions on this.

So, anyways, I watched it.
Glad I waited until I'd finished reading.
I quite like the book. But the film was terrible.

I read another essay about Great Expectations.

Usually I'll read an essay and be half nod and half throw it across the room. There is frequently use of big words to say dumb things. But then I have to use big words to say why I think they're dumb.

Okay, it was saying about Pip and Plot - Pip goes in search of a plot, and thinks he finds he's in one, and then turns out to be in another entirely.

Put like that, Pip makes me think of Andrew sooooo much.

And the essay reckons the whole thing is futile because Pip's plots end up all splat.

Well that misses out the actual point, which is that the only plot Pip *wrote* for himself was the only one that came to fruition, albeit not quite as he'd expected. Read more... )

So, I'm very much thinking Andrew. His stories mess him up, but they're all his trying to make sense of things too, and trying to make good meanings. Be a good human.

Want to see Andrew write a working story now.

I'm never sure how useful this lot is for class or anything. I just write down thoughts.

I really don't understand stories that start off by trying to make Giles un-Giles. Especially ones where it's all "wow, he looks younger!" I mean, given the amount of time he spends all beat up and/or wearing tweed, I can buy a certain amount of "looks better" could improve the story. Tweed looks scritchy. Nice leather obviously an improvement. And nothing being actually broken at the time is always yaay. But starting off being all "he changed his hair and now he looks about thirty!" or "there was a body swap and the temporary owner spent all his time working out and now he looks younger and like a bodybuilder"... Why?

I mean it isn't like there's a shortage of thirty year olds in the world. Or for that matter a surplus of stories about Giles when he was thirty. But suddenly shaving a couple of decades off his appearance... Why?

Also, he is not a bodybuilder. He's a martial artist. Some 'actor' people aside, they don't usually look like body builders. Giles does running, and fighting, and would therefore basically end up looking like a guy that runs and fights and doesn't much care if he looks all... calendar guy. And I don't think making him all anatomy drawing muscles is actually an improvement.

He's got a body for getting around in, not standing there being looked at. He's cuddly, and yet kick arse. I like that.

I also like his glasses. I don't think he looks better with them off. He looks un-Gilesy with them off. Some of the frames are better than others, but I like Giles in glasses. Also, if he wanders around without them, I get uncomfortable from sympathy fuzzy.
Yes, I know I'm slightly strange.
But anyways, arranging so he doesn't need glasses, not so much fun.

And any of these changes reduce his distinctiveness. I mean a 50 year old guy with glasses is in shorter supply as an action hero than a 30 year old body builder type. Distinctiveness, yaay.

... Yeah, I'm, er, not reading Great Expectations stuff right now.
I read a whole bunch.
Next I could read the introduction in the book, or a few more pages in one of the other books.

I think I'll have something to eat and see if I still feel like going back to sleep. Back to sleep and studying aren't so much mixy.

And I have to get up at 0645 tomorrow anyway.

I can't think of any summary for my fic that isn't either completely generic (*every* G/E writer does a post-Initiative fic) or a great big spoiler for the teaser / pre-credits bit at the start.
After that it rolls out with loads of twists that don't get given away in a sensible summary, but that first bit only has the one surprise, and it's sort of essential to the rest.
Actually, two surprises, which goes with the whole 2 theme.

ANYways

Shall I post the teaser and add summaries to subsequent parts?
Shall I go with the terribly generic for the first bit?

I also have the problem of trying to write a summary. At all. I'm sure I had a useful method filed around here somewhere, but I don't remember where.
I've got it down to three line TV guide blurb, but it came out all jokey, and the fic... isn't.
Also there's generic bad puns in it too. I think that needs changing.

If a three line summary could be all that brilliantly distinctive then stories wouldn't have to be so long.

*pouts*

Shall think on it some more.

While I'm wondering - I put a warning on my RFJ stories. Like, here. Does anyone read it? Anyone like it? Does it seem useful at all?

...Despite recent flapping, I do actually think stuff up myself. Is just the fiddly bits that I'm fussing over now.
