On Doctor Who and Companions' Clothing
Jun. 4th, 2010 05:59 pmI have noted Amy is fairly modest by the standards of her agegroup and theoretical weather expectations. I have noticed this because I can always tell she's wearing something on her lower half, and quite a lot often on people wandering around outside that's by no means apparent. The current definition of 'dress' seems to me to fit my idea of 'shirt', but *big shrugs*.
Doctor Who can give you a lovely tour through fashions past. Some of it needs new colors but you get some really great scientist miniskirts going on, or warrior woman mini everythings, or sparkly suits. I like the sparkly. If I was making Doctor Who I'd make there be futuristic sparklies again, because you don't get enough chances to have that much clothes fun.
I think the important bits in not treating women like things don't really have much to do with making sure you can't see bits of them. They do have a lot to do with making sure that seeing them isn't the only point for them being there, and I think Doctor Who has that covered.

Date: 2010-06-04 06:54 pm (UTC)And some of the outfits on Classic Who are gorgeous. Zoes sparkly coveralls or parts of Jo and Sarah Janes wardrobe come to mind. I'm currently catching up on Four and during Invasion of Time Leela in her sude outfit teams up with a Timelady in a long, dusty pink dress - beautiful visual, but also important part of the plot. :D
