enough coffee already

Have had a thought about Ianto and coffee.
Ianto makes good coffee. This is a distinctive feature of Ianto. So far, so good.
But if it is *the* distinctive feature... the only one who sees him that way is Owen. I mean Jack likes his coffee, but if that's the only thing of his he likes then that whole relationship gets a whole lot less than romantic.
So if there's a fic where the only one of his distinctive features we get to see is "Ianto makes coffee" then it feels more like Owen's pov than Ianto's, whoever is saying "I".
And Owen is a twat who doesn't like or value Ianto, so I don't really want to see Ianto through Owen's eyes.
(Except for that one fic where Ianto went to tidy up a mountain, because that managed to be Owen and good. Which is difficult.)

Point being... Okay, sometimes it feels like a fic is keeping the feature that the writer can empathise with most. So, coffee. But if 'teaboy' is an insult then only showing the coffee feels insulting. I quite like Ianto's other features, like his focus and quirky sense of humour and research skillz and the way he doesn't quit. Also the way he grins right before he nuts someone. That's just fun. Granted, more difficult to include in a PWP, but...

well there was a thing on one of the torchwood communities about how Ianto has a job with lots of stereotypically feminine features: Does food and cleaning and reports and is vastly underappreciated. Writing him as just coffee? Emphasises the 'underappreciated' part. And where's the fun in that? And, yeah, it's fun when Jack sees him and values him, that's the good stuff. But if he values him for coffee he's not really seeing him, so might as well be dating the dude at the counter in the coffee place.


... that's more words than I meant to spend on it because I don't think I said quite what I meant any one time.

But basically that's why I've had enough of coffee.

Urrgh. Headache and nausea. Everything tastes and smells extra, and not in any good way. I'm hungry but can't face food.

So, of course, I rewatch Countrycide.

... yeah, I'll own the illogic there.

Actually after I watched the behind the scenes stuff with how to build a stripped corpse it got easier to watch. Know what all the red bits are.

Small detail noted this time through - gun owned by local is rusty with tape around the handle. Can think of extra reasons he might not have pulled the trigger on Owen - doesn't look reliable at all.


Also from the behind the scenes, apparently the story for 1-07 was thought up with Mary as a bloke. And obviously they did more to it than just change the names, but the idea was to make it a story with lesbians without it being A Lesbian Story. So, I strongly suspect it wasn't thought through in a what does this do re stereotypes way. Which I kind of figured, because what's the odds of being that dumb on purpose?
... okay, don't answer that.



I still like Ianto. This is good.
He needs more training at the physical stuff but he tries.
He also hurts pretty.

Also also? Breathes through his mouth a lot. The number of emotions expressed as "mouth hangs open" is quite a wide range.



I wanna go sleep until I don't headache. But I've been asleep a lot already and I suspect that won't happen. Sulk.
