more specific today's DW writing thought

The story doesn't seem very well constructed.

So now I've got a brain full of Thoughts. Including a whole set of domestic violence related Issues tangled up with characters that I'd really not expect. ( Read more... )
DW last ep spoilers again
Jul. 1st, 2007 05:51 amI've been turning the DW season finale over in my head trying to think of how I'd fix it. Not how I can read it so it's fun - I've decided for right now I don't want to change my brain that much. Rather how I could take it to bits and rewrite it with the bits I like intact but making it, you know, not bad.

I don't know.
My story doesn't end up much like their story.
I guess I didn't like many bits of their story.
Tomorrow I will watch it again and see if I like it less or more.
... actually, technically, today.
Today is quite a few hours further along than I'd actually intended.
It being 0630.
I should probably actually sleep at some point.

Jul. 1st, 2007 12:02 pmReactions I really don't get: Going off a character because of knowing they'll look less hot when they're old. I mean, duh? Unless you like old and wrinkly anyway. People change.
My reaction to the rather offputting news is a somewhat different objection: ( Read more... )
Also? It doesn't make sense. ( Read more... )

Martha is a good name for a sidekick. Short and to the point, can be shouted quickly, but not too quickly, and has that useful aaaaaaaa on the end for when they're really really in danger.
Vowel sounds that can stretch out to a scream are clearly important.
Doctor doesn't look like it counts, but Doctaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa is clearly understandable and he probably hears it more often like that anyway.
Fred isn't a screaming sort of a name. You could get as far as Freeeeeeeeee and stick there but you'd sound more ideological than worried.
This is why Captain is a good yell for help name and Jack isn't. If you don't get as far as the n then you still have a name, if you leave off the ck you're pretty much with "Yaaaaaaa!"
Ianto is clearly a screamy sidekick name. The first syllable looks promising as a yell but then you're back to "Yaaaaaaaa!"
... I'm having screaming-each-other's-names thoughts that somewhat derail the thinking thing ...
Tosh is doubly useful because you have short and to the point as well as Toshikoooooooo for emergencies.
Owen and Gwen aren't really good screamers.
... in a purely linguistic sense. I don't want to know elsewise.
I mean, Oweeeeeeeeeee? Yeah, technically a scream, but not really a name, as such. Gweeeeeee.... well, you see the problem.
Rose weren't quite right as a sidekick name. I mean Rooooo rhyming with noooo can stretch out quite a long way but the se remains necessary.
Maaaaarthaaaaaa is clearly easier.
*note to self - start name collection. Two syllables, ends in scream.*

vague thought
Jul. 1st, 2007 05:16 pmDaleks, Cybermen and other bad things were brain in a box cases. Sometimes slightly squiddy and with more eyes, but basically brain in box.
So is the Face of Boe.
Him existing and being a good guy and all that is necessary to balance out the otherwise slightly creepy implication that being people can get sliced off by the body part. Because he's all nice and wise and self sacrificing and just a head in a jar then clearly you don't need any particular body parts to be a good person. Which is good. On a disability and gender level as well.

ticky box anti-ism
Jul. 1st, 2007 05:28 pmSometimes I feel like I have to turn stories upside down before they're any fun anymore.
I has a new plan.
My clever new laptop has a program I use to write my essays. I can make a tree with things like "Contexts" and "Social" and "Ethnic-gender-sexuality-disability-religion" on different levels. And when I analyse a text I make a new copy of the tree, put the poem or the name of a novel or whatever in the start bubble, and make sure every branch of the tree has some comments in it.
I think maybe each of those keywords could have a ticky box with "Evil-insane-dead-depowered-enslaved" next to it just to make it real quick. Oh, and another box for "present-marginalised-ignored", maybe with room for numbers.
This tree could be a useful tool for TPTB to use to read over any and all TW or DW scripts, or genre stuff in general. Maybe even television, who knows!
Then you remember to look at the story every which way up... well, every way I've got on my tree so far anyways... and if you find something that makes you go "Er, oops?" It hasn't got all the way to being made already.
I think maybe any one tree might not look too bad, but if you've got the same sort of thing on the same sort of branches on too many times then it's kind of a problem.
It's like why I've quit reading comics. Too many times you know what is going to happen to who because of what category label they've got. First it gets boring, then it gets hurtful.

DW: Last of the Time Lords
Jul. 1st, 2007 07:54 pmI rewatched it, and I don't see how the parts fit together. It's like they're telling two or three different stories that don't quite fit or something.
Mostly what I felt watching this time was nothing.
The thing is, ( Read more... )
They set up so much story last week and then they set up a new one and then they set up *another* new one and only answered that.
That's my lingering feeling about the whole thing. Just jaggedy bits of story that leave whacking great holes.
