Doctor Who: Pest Control

10th Doctor and Donna, audio exclusive.
Usually, I don't listen to audio books. In fact the two audio exclusive Torchwood adventures were the first in my adult life. I usually watch TV with the subtitles on and if I get tired I hit mute because writing is just easier. I like writing. Books are good. So I didn't think audio books would be my thing.
I totally get it now. It's a whole other art form. And there's things you can do with them that are just neat.
And, okay, this is partly due to the fact that David Tennant's natural accent does happy melty things to my head. And if I adjust the headphones just right it sounds like he's *in* my head, which is even better. But I never got too carried away in that direction because Things kept Happening, with extra added sound effects and little bits of music. And because DT can do a lot of different voices.
... really, a lot. Is that all him? That's just cool.
Though as per usual I had to pause to giggle when he tries to do voices I know ie Donna.
... DT sounding like Donna is persistently amusing.
The audio also takes the opportunity to have fun with plots that would break the FX budget. Aliens! And more aliens! And some other aliens too! And a Giant Robot! And things going boom! You don't get that on TV. Well, not all at once. And with the particular aliens chosen there's appropriate sound effects to go with them, which is just neat. So it works as sounds.
I should totally pay more attention to sounds.
My attention span started to run out a bit more than two hours in. But I seem to be incapable of pausing it because It's Just Getting Good. Except it was always Just Getting Good, so I was lying there for two and a half hours realising I haven't had anything to eat since two sandwiches yesterday. And as soon as the close credits stopped I had to run for the bathroom. Er, yes, TMI, but I mean, it was that good. Cannot pause! More story! And it does proper cliffhangers in the middle. Nice!
Plot and themes are, hmmm, familiar? It's classic Doctor Who stuff, remixed a bit. Recogniseable threads from lots of adventures. But that's not because it's derivative, it's because Doctor Who is About stuff. So it has that stuff in it. And, also, some things that fit it in to 10+Donna's season. Themey bits. Some comments make more sense before 4-06, but Donna is being affected by her travels already. There's some nice character stuff for her. Although with the frequent medical mentions there were moments where Martha comparisons do spring to mind.
To be a bit more specific ( Read more... )
So it was interesting, and well read - only a couple lines I felt had emphasis in odd places, and the accent is a bonus for difficult words cause I don't know what they're meant to sound like in that voice anyway.
I likes it muchly.
... but I was planning to save it for the between seasons drought, so once again I need my willpower adjusted. *sigh*
Still, having started in on audio adventures, there's a looooooooooong lot of CDs unexplored yet.
I can also be watching Doctor Who. I've only seen all the episodes for 5 and 7 and 8 9 10. There's a ton left I've downloaded but not watched. Only I have oddly mixed feelings about actually watching them all. Because, you see, then I've watched them all. Or as close as one can get without a time machine. And that would just be odd. Clearly there should always be more Doctor Who out there.
... mah brain, it are mystery...
