I'm reading through the recs on Torchwood House.
This one starts with a quote. Which usually irritates me, because there's too much song fic in the world that never got beyond 'that quote reminds me of x' in the bunny stage. But this is a good quote.

What we call the beginning is often the end
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from.

--T. S. Eliot, "Little Gidding"

... Jack was quoting? "The end is where we start from." Right there in the episode.
Which I thought sounded pretty dumb. Er, cultural literacy fail.

LITTLE GIDDING
(No. 4 of 'Four Quartets')
T.S. Eliot

I don't think I've read it before, but I know this bit

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

This bit is neat

We die with the dying:
See, they depart, and we go with them.
We are born with the dead:
See, they return, and bring us with them.

I should probably read the whole thing but my brain keeps sliding off it.

... yes, I'm a lit student. I wanted to be a film student. Actually having studied film I think I wanted to be a Doctor Who and Buffy student, but *shrugs*

I go read fanfic now.

I'm rewatching all the Mickey episodes of Doctor Who.
I usually rewatch Dalek ones or Jack ones. I actually don't usually sit down and watch the whole first season in a row.
I usually skip Aliens of London and World War Three. It's the Slitheen. The gas exchange thing is just... it does not amuse.
But this time I can see why it's there. It's in the bits where there's lots of politics and exposition and big chunks of data that probably bore small childrens. So put something really obvious in the middle and maybe don't bore them. Not sure it works though.
I'm not sure the two parter had two parts of plot. Bits of it felt a bit slow. Lots of running and being chased and yet more Slitheen arriving but doing nothing and, you know, shortage of new interest. But the bit once he's on the phone to Mickey, that's good stuff.

Mickey is... er, rather broadly acted, in these episodes. I can shrug and say it's a teenage sort of trying too hard and works in character, but, well. Still, he gets plenty interesting.

I like that the Doctor invites him and he turns him down. I mean, it's all very well saying it's the Best Thing Ever, travel with the Doctor, but the whole nearly getting killed a lot and/or nearly killing your girlfriend bit, that's a bit much.

The Doctor ... I actually can see Jackie's point about him being creepy. I mean, he starts the series with "don't tell or people get killed", which is one of the standar ideas I hate. Telling true things is a good thing. It should be a rule. And then he's all "come with me now, no we can't stay for tea, leave your mum and run away" and it's not nice.

I like the pickles / you kiss him? bit and I like when the Slitheen goes boom and they get guts all over themselves. Comedy self defence killing ftw!

I also like that Mickey was competent and researched about the Doctor in the year he was away.

Anyone researching Mickey would find the thing where he was a murder suspect for a year. Awkward.

Right. Boom Town. Mickey and Jack. :-)

... my computer just dinged to remind me to be at the Whoniversal Appeal party. :-(
No Cardiff. No exam. Lose.

Saw the Doctor Who thingy.
... it was a bit boring.
If you knew the title you knew the whole thing.

Did not record the Doctor Who thingy cause the recorder box is doing something else right now.
But it will be all over the internet.
