Big Finish Audio: An Earthly Child
Dec. 24th, 2009 01:33 amI was really looking forward to this one. Susan! We find out what happened next! Yaays!
... unfortunately for about the first half of listening all I could think was how many lines I'd put the emphasis in an entirely different place, especially those read by Jake McGann. I'd not set out to be picky, but emphasis shifts the meaning around and I kept feeling a bit behind unscrambling things that only almost made sense. I'm sure other people haven't that opinion at all.
I liked what they did with Alex Campbell. There's story there, where there could easily have been saccharine. And it makes plenty sense.
But then the other thing I got stuck thinking all the way through was that bit with the 9th Doctor in The Empty Child:
Dr. Constantine: Before this war began, I was a father and a grandfather. Now I'm neither. But I'm still a doctor.
The Doctor: Yeah. Know the feeling.
So you can't listen to it with just his past in mind, and I kept on wanting to yell at the Doctor, especially at the end.
But there's still room. For a while.
