cleaner cleaned all the things

One of the items in yesterday's shopping leaked. I think I have found it and it was one and only one of the fruit in juice pots. I'm leaving everything sitting on the sink bit to see if anything else leaks.
The annoying part is I thought I'd found a drip when I was shopping, but we were checking out by then so I shrugged and packed. But no, I was correct, and now all my shopping and my trundle bag has pear juice. *sigh*

Cleaner was here. Cleaner poured the sink unblocker down the bathroom sink. Now I must wait a bunch of time and run the hot tap a lot.

I couldn't find the soap. Then I found it when I knocked it down from the edge of a roll of leftover carpet (no I don't know why I still have it) and it fell in the bin. Luckily I have much more soap.

I don't have as much lunch as I thought though. When I was shopping I was all lalala, plenty of foods! But then I realised that food ceases to be food if it has been open a long time and/or goes mouldy, so as it turns out, notably less food. Is okay though, I have bread and soup and marmite and lots of stuff in the freezer. It's just embarrassing that I can't grasp that whole use by dates thing in a reliable way.

... and the internet needs to know!

Bunny stew

So I have been batting around an idea for a while that takes goa'uld and instead of treating them as false gods treats them like spirits, with all the varied relations that could involve. Like, there could be one sets himself up as a god, and another that makes deals, and a third that slips hosts like they're this season's fashion. Like I wrote here, people would invite the spirit in, and all kinds of everything would happen.

Only I don't want to write it as fanfic, exactly - though this afternoon's nap involved a thing with John Sheppard and a sea eagle and a symbiote, and Rodney being completely freaked out because a symbiote wants him for his brain, so as usual even ideas that are meant to go off on their own get populated by fanfic characters. I don't want to do fanfic, since it would be bad out of character fanfic. But, is it ever going to be original enough if I file the serial numbers off?

Stargate isn't the only series with possessing entities. I don't really want to go urban horror or classic fantasy, so I'm sticking with snakey aquatic symbiotes and not glowy or smoke actual spirit beings. That doesn't exactly make the horror versions irrelevant though, since glowy or otherwise they're still your basic possession story. Next Gen did one episode with the thingies that stuck their tails out the back of your neck. Did Babylon 5 have something with symbiotes? DS9 of course had Trill, who don't behave quite the same but are an interesting take.

So now I'm vaguely looking for the same sort of thing in other sources, partly so I don't reinvent the wheel. Intelligent symbiotes: who else used them?

Of course when I tried to come up with plots for these dudes to exist in I only came up with: persecuted minority, where the ones who went to the sea have people trying to carve the bad spirits out of them after, and/or a lovely shining city with the power running out and everyone running from the side over the sea as the cliffs crumble out from under them. Sort of Atlantis if it landed on the beach a few thousand years ago. One of these days its all going to tip in. Unless someone starts understanding instead of just living there.

Neither element is adequate on its own. There would still have to be some reasons big enough to send people to the spirits in the first place. Something that would empty out the city and leave them not knowing. Threats and catastrophes and little plot of the week stuff.

... mostly so far I'm coming up romance plots. *sigh*

And the ghastly keeps going

Am doing reading for Victorians and Victorianism. 'In Darkest Africa', chapter 6, 7 and 8. It's really creepy. It keeps on going on about how they're the first people to see things, the only ones who ever went there, and then when they find other people there already they shoot them. Their plan for making camp along their route is to go find a village, move in, and pull down any bits they aren't using so as to build defences with. And it describes the locals in the usual stupid-lazy-cowardly-vicious stereotype while describing all the stupid lazy cowardly and vicious things the writer is doing while pissing about on someone else's continent. It complains about how the locals aren't even raised to try and keep promises while making plans to go shoot the locals they've made agreements with, including ones they just swore to be blood brothers with, if they feel like it, or if there's too many delays, or if they need to teach someone a lesson. It's grotesque.

I really hope I'm a different sort of human to these humans I keep reading about lately. If not, can I opt out of being human? There's so many kinds of monsters in these skins.
