Am doing reading for Victorians and Victorianism. 'In Darkest Africa', chapter 6, 7 and 8. It's really creepy. It keeps on going on about how they're the first people to see things, the only ones who ever went there, and then when they find other people there already they shoot them. Their plan for making camp along their route is to go find a village, move in, and pull down any bits they aren't using so as to build defences with. And it describes the locals in the usual stupid-lazy-cowardly-vicious stereotype while describing all the stupid lazy cowardly and vicious things the writer is doing while pissing about on someone else's continent. It complains about how the locals aren't even raised to try and keep promises while making plans to go shoot the locals they've made agreements with, including ones they just swore to be blood brothers with, if they feel like it, or if there's too many delays, or if they need to teach someone a lesson. It's grotesque.

I really hope I'm a different sort of human to these humans I keep reading about lately. If not, can I opt out of being human? There's so many kinds of monsters in these skins.

He's such an idiot. What he describes is at such an angle to reality it's just ridiculous. When he finds empty places he blames everything on natives fighting each other. He moves in to villages, does what he likes, and buggers off again in the morning.

As we were disappearing from view of Gwengwere, the population was seen scurrying from the right bank and islands back to their homes, which they had temporarily vacated for our convenience. It seemed to me to be an excellent arrangement. It saved trouble of speech, exerted possibly in useless efforts for peace and tedious chaffer. They had only one night's inconvenience, and were there many caravans advancing as peaceably as we were, natural curiosity would in time induce them to come forward to be acquainted with the strangers.
Our people found abundant to eat in the fields, and around the villages.

Soooo... they're reacting almost like the first town you came to with your 400 rifles you completely destroyed? And their inconvenience is in no way prolonged by you having ate all their food, having not bothered to bring enough of your own. And by this point there's not the slightest hint of trying to trade for it, he just declares all empty fields to be abandoned, and eats them.

Ghastly hypocritical idiot.

and WTF?

Bakula was an exceptionally crafty lad, a pure cannibal, to whom a mess of human meat would have been delectable. He was a perfect mimic, and had by native cunning protected himself by conforming readily to what he divined would be pleasing to the strangers by whom he was surrounded.

Sooooo... the kid is being nice, polite, helpful, and all good things; the idiot in charge concludes from this it's all a lie and he really wants to eat them. What kind of brain is that?
