Doctor Who: Big Finish Audio: Primeval

beccaelizabethPrimeval: 5 and Nyssa and a rather good plot. It's set fairly precisely, right after Time Flight, it says on the cover. Nyssa was ill and fainted and stuff on TV, and in this one she's very ill indeed. The Doctor needs to take her to a medical doctor, someone who understands Traken anatomy. There's an obvious problem with doing that linear, and a less obvious one with going somewhere near to Nyssa's time - they've eradicated illness, so who would know how to treat it? So he looked up who the greatest doctor in Traken history was, and takes her there, way back in her planet's primitive history. There isn't even a Keeper yet.
... three guesses what key event in Traken history the Doctor has turned up just in time for, and the first two don't count...
So it's a historical-with-aliens like they usually do for Earth history, only in Nyssa's planet's past instead. It pokes around Traken looking for the weak spots. The locals think the place is perfect, but the Doctor turns up saying perfection is something to strive for, not something that's ever achieved. He says something about a snake in the garden and the locals decide he's the snake. He's not entirely sure they're wrong. But the bit where the great healer thinks that basically Nyssa is ill of evil spirits is kind of worrying him...
All that's the beginning of the first story. I really like how it unfolds, so I won't tell the rest of it. It has lots of characters and lots of running around and bits of discussing religion and Religion Is Freaky and lots of kabooms and some violence and also Nyssa in a swimsuit. It goes out of its way to make sure we know Nyssa is wandering around in a swimsuit that she doesn't consider to cover a whole lot of her. Since it's audio it's particularly amusing when it insists on that bit.
It has a little bit of Men Save The Day, but Nyssa gets to do a few things, and the greatest healer in her planet's history is a woman too and she gets to do stuff, so I think it balances out like Doctor Who usually does. I would have liked Nyssa to have more opinions and changing her world and a bit less being fainted from ill. But she wasn't fainted the whole time or anything, I just like audio Nyssa.
Quite good. Liked it.
