BFA DW The Dark Flame, The Rapture
Sep. 2nd, 2021 09:53 pmToday's Big Finish listened to was The Dark Flame.
I dont know if its that I didnt quite follow what was going on or if it felt that way because early Big Finish gives the impression it is referring to a lot of things that are not early Big Finish.
Like, this one had Benny in it, and the Doctor referred to her as Ace's friend, but I dont know when that happened? I know I missed listening to one CD because it isnt in the app (probably didnt buy it through the website) so maybe that would explain all?
But there was also a bit where Ace survives a thing because she's wearing future army surplus from when she learned how to kill Daleks real well, and like, that... does not feel like it follows on from Colditz quite?
So I was left feeling like I was missing things, either in other audios or here, or maybe from books, I really do not know.
I also think I need to listen to the end again to get more than a vague sense of how the Doctor won, but that's because I was combining listening with playing more Kingmaker and I had to level up characters twice because it crashed after the first time...
... I should stop playing Kingmaker but I couldnt make sense of the stupid tutorial for Baldur's Gate because not all the picture is actually on the screen on my TV...
... trying to concentrate on level up decisions was not mixy with following the end of the story.
So I dont know if its that the story had problems or if I wasnt concentrating at a key minute.
Last night I listened to The Rapture and then deleted it off my phone.
I dont think I hated it as much as the first time I heard it, many years ago, but I still very much didnt want to listen it again in the near future.
The idea that Ace has Been Through Some Shit so she tries to have a holiday and gets a story does a compare contrast with some mentally ill humans and some alien invaders who have snapped from the horrors of war... I mean, that has some story mileage, obviously, but by going uncomfortable places. And it feels more Torchwood territory than DW, a bit.
Also a bunch of these early Big Finish have a problem of trying to make a world with very repetitive sound. So there is world that is mostly rainstorm, world that is screaming dust storm, world that is dance club in Ibiza. Whatever the merits of the individual story they have to contend with even being heard over the stupid rain dust scream beat.
They have got better at that bit.
In other news today I keep being distracted by where I doodled Flash symbols in pink highlighter on my forearm. Not quite a winner of a design yet. The Flash lightning is very simple so they can doodle it real small for their comic book people, but then at forearm length it's super blocky.
Also, pink is not the way to go with that one.
But I was feeling artistic.
That was my day.
