The setup is that the Doctor put an ad out for a new companion and now he's doing something The Apprentice style. I would probably get more out of that if I'd ever watched The Apprentice. But it worked plenty good anyway.
I like that the Doctor is being all stern at people. I like that nobody and nothing is what it seems. There were a few bobbles in it because the difference between 'the character is Doing Acting' and 'the writing and or actor has gone a bit fakey' is a very fine one and I didn't guess.
I still liked Asha best. Kick arse character. I like it when characters can make things go boom.
... Ace should do more making things go boom.
They did not choose Asha, for plenty good reasons.
I didn't see the end until it happened. I like it when things are surprising.
I rather like that by the end of the story we actually don't really know the new companion. We know the name, but they'll be new next story too.
I'm not so sure though that their actual profession works so very well. A bit tail eating maybe? Like when writers write about writers writing.
But it will be all new and exciting and stuff :-)
I think this one will be more fun on second listen because I will know which bits are Clues and feel in on the joke, instead of being sort of Uh-oh on the wrong level, wondering if they'll pick a companion I won't like at all.
Actually, come to think, I have listened to 136 Doctor Who audios now, with a whole bunch of different companions, and bunches of one off characters the Doctor asks to come with him or works with or whatever, and I cannot immediately think of anyone I did not like to listen to in stories. All the characters had plenty of stuff that worked about them. Characters off the TV most often got better. So I think Big Finish do actually know what elements are needed for a companion. Cool.
I think all 4 candidates in this story start with a good balance of seems-right and seems-wrong and get you interested in guessing. Is a good trick.
I liked this one, and I think it is better to listen to without knowing who will be in later months, so I'm glad I listened quick.
