Where are they now
Jul. 21st, 2010 05:41 amI keep thinking about the end to the most recent season of Doctor Who. You know, with the twists people watching on TV in other countries haven't seen. So,
That thing where they wake up where they would have been if the Doctor never existed... how many people did that thing happen to?
I mean the vast majority of them would have woke up dead.
The universe would have woke up dead. repeatedly.
Clearly there is another rule going on here.
I think it's like when Amy still existed even when her parents didn't, the lives the Doctor saved stayed saved but they no longer knew how.
But the thing that keeps nagging at me is: where would everyone wake up? What would the people around them remember? And do they remember both lives now?
At somewhere between midnight and dawn on 26/06/2010 everyone resets to the life they would have had without The Doctor. Which in some cases is mind bogglingly impossible. And since many of them are time travellers, they all have the same chance to remember him that Amy had of remembering Rory. Difficult, but not impossible. But everyone around them would remember this new version of their lives.
Would it be like in the Big Finish Audio where 7 was in the alternate nazi universe in the middle of a plan set up by his alternate self but because he was a time traveller he only remembered history as it had actually happened to him? Would people remember a whole other life and then just wake up in bed in their new one?
Also thinking of audio xovers, what about Tegan? She had that brain thing. What if she woke up without brain thing, like Rory woke up not-plastic? Which would be a bit extra surprising to her if she had at some point died of it. And when the Doctor came back Rory didn't start being plastic again - probably - so Tegan wouldn't start being ill again.
Just the number of stories where the universe would somehow have to fit in everyone the Doctor has ever known ... even the ones where it's flat out impossible...
I mean does Jack cease to exist? If the TARDIS and the Doctor don't exist? No, for the same reason Amy didn't cease to exist when her parents did. But then how on any Earth could Jack make sense if he didn't remember the Doctor?
If they wake up remembering the Doctor when nobody around them does, what is that like?
If they wake up not remembering the Doctor and then it all comes flooding back... well, the Brigadier would sort of sigh and roll his eyes and think 'Again?' but everyone else would be a bit boggled.
What happened to the Master? I mean if he woke up where he would have been had the Doctor never existed. He wouldn't wake up plastic. Would he wake up fried? On his first set of regenerations? Having conquered the universe?
With Amy and Rory it's simples, they only had a few minutes difference from the point of view of everyone around them, it was the night before their wedding the whole time.
For River it's a mystery, a proper story sort of mystery, where she woke up and how she got there and how she got anywhere else after that. I hope they do answering properly or give us enough clues to know it.
For pretty much anyone else...
The story you could make!
So I'm not trying to nail down what happened as if there's only one right answer, but the potential it has as a story generator, it keeps grabbing me. Only it's so open ended as a story generator I can't settle on any particular thing as needs telling.
