Three Big Finish Doctor Who audios

On the way to and from college this week I listened to three Doctor Who audios.
I finished 137 The Whispering Forest. 5, Turlough, Tegan and Nyssa. I like that they've got the team back together. It's handy that they can split people up to be kidnapped by two seperate sets of bad guys and still have pairs of ongoing characters to talk to each other. There's more people to put in danger and more ways to escape. But compared to adventures where there's only one of them at a time there's a whole lot less time for any character to be their own selves at people. It was more about running and getting caught, albeit in character appropriate ways. I can't pick a particular moment out of this one where anyone was being themselves quotably. Lots of problem solving happened. Figuring things out. Alien planets with alien views. It's just having listened to the whole thing I can't remember any particular part I'd want to revisit, or a reason to listen again. Properly adventure shaped, left me a bit flat.
I got around to listening to Nevermore. 8 and his new companion... I'd have to look up her name again, which isn't a good sign. She didn't impress me with her first adventure, she was playing a role and using a fake name and stuff. She didn't leave me with any particular impression in this adventure neither, she was just... there. She wandered off and got captured and got scared. She doesn't know things so she needs everything explained over again. Does Big Finish actually get listeners who are new to Doctor Who? Not just new to the audios, but need it explained what Time Lords are? I don't know. As to the specifics of the adventure... it had a plot that I think was okay, 8 going around figuring things out, being a time traveller and stuff. But all the Poe stuff just felt a bit much. It's a Poe theme park ride. Possibly one could be in the mood for that many references, but I wasn't. I like more the ongoing setup of worrying time traveller than I liked this particular story.
Last I listened to Whispers of Terror, 6 and Peri. I actually liked this one. Nice setup for audio, the audio museum, and nice use of our limited dataflow, at least if we're meant to see it coming before the character does. Six was himself in a very abrasive way. I liked the moment where knowing how much of a git he usually is turns into a plot point as Peri figures out it's someone faking his voice. Except I'm not sure she did actually figure it out. Peri was very... nothingy. She wandered around being an excuse for the audio to hear things, mostly. She trusted the wrong people and got captured and escaped a bunch. She didn't *do* anything. Adventures need something for everyone to do.
More college means more opportunity to listen to audio on the bus, but also means I'm likely to run out of Doctor Who before I run out of lessons. I've listened to almost all of them now. If I catch up and have to wait for the new ones every month I'll be mostly on reruns on the bus. But I've still got 14 left before that happens.
Most of my entertainment budget has been going to Big Finish for rather a long time now. Happy little subscriber me. Weird to think I might catch up.
