ST:TNG The Measure of a Man
Oct. 9th, 2010 06:32 pmNow that was proper SF. Takes an issue and boots it around, with good acting and lines that don't just clunk. Also, everyone loves Data by now, so calling him a toaster is :-( Everyone is invested so the usual levels of Extreme Sincerity seem appropriate.
Is a bit odd though, wondering if this is good ST:TNG. I mean, they've got a crew and a starship and the whole of space to poke around in, and that's what most episodes are about. But this one is about Starfleet and the Federation, how their rules work, and it doesn't use the usual skills of the crew at all, or require the starship. And I like it better than most of the others exactly because it's poking at how they work, instead of assuming they're doing it right and going off to poke the universe. But tis still an odd shape for a Star Trek episode.
Is the whole new Battlestar Galactica based on what happens when someone makes the opposite ruling? Toasters all over the place there...
