Yeah. Especially if it's true that they originally intended the insurgency to parallel the American Revolution (hence the leader guy comparing himself to George Washington) which would have at least given the insurgents backstory and motivations and goals (if not necessarily the moral high ground).
I don't know why they nixed it. Was it a well-meaning attempt to make the story more "relevant"? Or were they afraid Americans would react badly to being reminded that the War of Independence was messier and dirtier and more complicated than the patriotic songs and speeches portray it?
