random coat question

You know the coat in Rocketeer, with the front that's one big piece held on with buttons?
What's the words for that?

Cause I was trying to make up a uniform with body armour in it, and that needs a plate held in place over your heart, and zipping up the middle is not the way to do that.

The new osprey body armour is side fastening, that way, if you do get shot you can just cut the side sections and lift the front section containing all the plates straight off without having to move the patient.

I tried it on once. I could hardly stand. It is very heavy to have ceramic plates strapped to you. It also restricts movement a LOT.

However, if this is in the future, will they not have invented some kind of fabric that is as strong as ceramics but thin and flexible? You could just cheat and do that...

It is going to be nice light future tech, but I figure it needs to be the same shape to cover the same bits. Same like medieval breastplates and tabards or Japanese samurai suits or Rocketeer leathers, only getting more flexible.
